According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device comprises an actuator configured to drive a head stack assembly including a plurality of magnetic heads, a preamplifier connected to each of the magnetic heads with a plurality of traces, and a control section configured to control read/write of the plurality of magnetic heads from/to the magnetic disk through the preamplifier. While a first magnetic head among the plurality of magnetic heads executes a write operation, the control section interrupts access of a second magnetic head in proximity to the first magnetic head to the magnetic disk.

Dual writer head design

A storage device includes a transducer head with multiple write elements having write poles of different sizes. For example, the transducer head may include two write poles of different width configured to write to a same surface of a storage medium. A controller of the storage device is configured to selectively engage one of the multiple write elements to write data to the storage medium.

Skew compensation in a patterned medium

A system may compensate for skew in a patterned medium, such as but not limited to a self-assembling bit patterned medium, with a write pole separated from a data storage medium by an air bearing. The write pole being connected to a controller. The data storage medium can have a plurality of magnetic islands arranged in data tracks with each data track having a track center. The write pole may be selectively shifted from the track center by the controller to compensate for a skewed write pole configuration.

Resistive temperature sensors for improved asperity, head-media spacing, and/or head-media contact detection

A sensor supported by a head transducer has a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and a sensor resistance. The sensor operates at a temperature above ambient and is responsive to changes in sensor-medium spacing. Conductive contacts connected to the sensor have a contact resistance and a cross-sectional area adjacent to the sensor larger than that of the sensor, such that the contact resistance is small relative to the sensor resistance and negligibly contributes to a signal generated by the sensor. A multiplicity of head transducers each support a TCR sensor and a power source can supply bias power to each sensor of each head to maintain each sensor at a fixed temperature above an ambient temperature in the presence of heat transfer changes impacting the sensors. A TCR sensor of a head transducer can include a track-oriented TCR sensor wire for sensing one or both of asperities of the medium.

The disclosed technology provides for a method and system comprising determining a write-encroachment threshold of a recording medium, determining a track as off-track and one or more tracks substantially near the off-track as unwriteable, flagging the one or more tracks substantially near the off-track track, and writing write data for the one or more flagged tracks to a media cache. In a recovery process, the write data can be later transferred back to the flagged tracks.

Servo parameterization for multi-sensor reader

A storage media includes a plurality of servo sectors with embedded servo patterns characterized by one or more servo pattern parameters. Each of the servo sectors has a servo pattern parameter based on a separation between read sensors of a transducer head reading the servo sector.
