A multimedia visual progress indication system that provides a cache bar that is overlaid onto the program material or displayed on a dedicated display. A cache bar indicates the length of a recording session or the length of stored program material and expands to the right when material is being recorded. Index and/or bookmark indicators are displayed next to the cache bar. A position indicator moves within the cache bar and tells the user visually where his current position is within the program material. Numeric time or counter mark of the current position is displayed in the vicinity of the cache bar. The trick play bar and its associated components are displayed for a predetermined time period.

The image recording apparatus according to the present invention is provided with a conversion device that converts an optical image of a subject to an electrical signal, a recording circuit that records the electrical signal achieved through the conversion device in a storage device as image data and a display control circuit that detects an available capacity at the storage device and the length of time that power supply by a source is possible and displays them on a display as available capacity information and remaining power supply time information. The available capacity information indicates the length of available recording time remaining at the available capacity that has been detected.

A communication system includes a terminal having a first storage section for storing a number of pieces of content information, a second storage section for storing a number of pieces of the content information, a storage control section for placing a content ID stored in the second storage section into purchase information for each terminal and stored in the second storage section, an access control section for controlling access to the content information corresponding to the content ID stored in the second storage section, and an accounting setting section for setting an amount of a fee to be imposed on the terminal in response to the purchase information.

One or more methods and systems of indexing an AVC video stream are presented. In one embodiment, the method comprises identifying one or more fields within a picture of an AVC video stream. In one embodiment, a field of the one or more fields indicates the beginning of each picture. In a second embodiment, a field of the one or more fields indicates a picture type of a picture. In a third embodiment, a field of the one or more fields indicates whether a picture is a reference or a non-reference picture. By determining that a picture is a non-reference picture, the picture may be discarded, thereby reducing the memory required to implement the indexing system while increasing the available memory size. In one embodiment, a system of indexing an AVC video stream comprises a control processor, a memory, and a set of instructions resident in the memory.

In a network-based system for recommending media content items based on user preferences, clients contact a server on a periodic basis, independent of the user. In addition to client-server interaction, clients also interact with one another in peer-to-peer fashion. Peers query one another and evaluate their similarity to each other in an interactive comparison of user preferences. When two clients are sufficiently similar, the interaction culminates in the originating client downloading content listings from the targeted peer to generate suggestions for their user. If the two clients are dissimilar, the query may be terminated, or the targeted peer may route the query to a second targeted peer. In addition to the lists of preferences, the originating client may download actual content items from the targeted peers.

Method and apparatus for storing archive images to a substrate, such as a rotatable optical disc. In some embodiments, an optical medium has a substrate which stores a plurality of archived images in a human detectable form on a surface of the substrate and control data associated with the archived images to facilitate optical recovery of said human detectable images from the surface. The archived images are arranged as a sequence of tiles on a recording layer of the optical medium each tile having an associated length and width. The control data are arranged as machine readable information that identifies an overall content of the plurality of archived images.

A transport control interface may be provided by an interactive television program guide application to provide information, control or both for live and recorded video programming. The transport control interface may indicate to the user the time duration of live or recorded program and any time segments of the program that have been recorded. The transport control interface may automatically adjust the start and end time shown to accommodate various factors such as continuous viewing on a particular channel, multiple recorded segments, buffer size, etc. Various information associated with the live or recorded video programming may be displayed in the transport control interface.

A television viewer interface system provides a viewer interface that allows the viewer to access different functions of a system. A highlight bar is responsive to the user's commands and is used to indicate the current menu item that can be selected by the user. Information is presented in a successive disclosure format where the user navigates through menus by moving the highlight bar to the right to obtain more information or to the left to see less information and return to the previous location. The background colors of each set of menus remains consistent throughout the user's experience such that the user intuitively knows what menu area he is in through the color cues. The invention provides indicators that tell the user that more information is available in a particular direction for a menu item.

A transport control interface may be provided by an interactive television program guide application to provide information, control or both for live and recorded video programming. A method comprises creating calibration data using a first control circuitry of an apparatus, replacing the first control circuitry with a second control circuitry in the apparatus, and operating the apparatus with the second control circuitry using the calibration data. As an example, the apparatus may be a disc drive. The second control circuitry may be substantially similar to the first control circuitry such that calibration measurements using the first control circuitry are applicable to the second control circuitry. The first control circuitry may be included in a circuit board that is replaced with a second circuit board including the second control circuitry. In an exemplary embodiment, the second circuit board may include different and/or additional components relative to the first circuit board, such as integrated video inputs and/or video control circuitry.
