A fuel core for a nuclear reactor in one embodiment includes an upper internals unit and a lower internals unit comprising nuclear fuel assemblies. The assembled fuel core includes an upper core plate, a lower core plate, and a plurality of channel boxes extending therebetween. Each channel box comprises a plurality of outer walls and inner walls collectively defining a longitudinally-extending interior channels or cells having a transverse cross sectional area configured for holding no more than a single nuclear fuel assembly in some embodiments. A cylindrical reflector circumferentially surrounds channel boxes and is engaged at opposing ends by the upper and lower core plates. Adjacent cells within each channel box are formed on opposite sides of inner walls such that the cells are separated from each other by the inner walls alone without any water gaps therebetween which benefits neutronics for some small modular reactor designs.

Molten fuel reactor thermal management configurations

Configurations of molten fuel salt reactors are described that allow for active cooling of the containment vessel of the reactor by the primary coolant. Furthermore, naturally circulating reactor configurations are described in which the reactor cores are substantially frustum-shaped so that the thermal center of the reactor core is below the outlet of the primary heat exchangers. Heat exchanger configurations are described in which welded components are distanced from the reactor core to reduce the damage caused by neutron flux from the reactor. Radial loop reactor configurations are also described.

A modular nuclear reactor system includes a lift-out, replaceable nuclear reactor core configured for replacement as a singular unit during a single lift-out event, such as rather than lifting and replacing individual fuel assemblies and/or fuel elements. The system includes a reactor vessel and a power generation system configured to convert thermal energy in a high temperature working fluid received from the reactor vessel into electrical energy. The reactor vessel includes: a vessel inlet and an adjacent vessel outlet arranged near a bottom on the vessel; a vessel receptacle configured to receive a unified core assembly; locating datums in the base of the vessel receptacle and configured to constrain a core assembly in multiple degrees of freedom; and an interstitial zone surrounding the vessel receptacle and housing a set of control or moderating drums.

METHOD FOR FABRICATING A COMPOSITE MODERATOR

A composite moderator medium for nuclear reactor systems and a method of fabricating a composite moderator block formed of the composite moderator medium. The composite moderator medium includes two or more moderators, such as a low moderating material and a high moderating material. The high moderating material has a higher neutron slowing down power compared to the low moderating material. The low moderating material includes a moderating matrix of silicon carbide or magnesium oxide. The high moderating material is dispersed within the moderating matrix and includes beryllium, boron, or a compound thereof. The high moderating material is encapsulated within the low moderating material such that the high moderating material is not exposed outside of the low moderating material. The method can include selecting a sintering aid and a weight percent of the sintering aid in a composite moderator mixture based on the low moderating material and spark plasma sintering.

Fast spectrum molten chloride test reactors

Alternative designs for a modular test reactor are presented. In one aspect, a molten fuel salt nuclear reactor includes a vessel defining a reactor volume, the vessel being open-topped and otherwise having no penetrations. A neutron reflector is provided within the vessel and displacing at least some of the reactor volume, the neutron reflector defining a reactor core volume. A plurality of heat exchangers are contained within the vessel above the neutron reflector. A flow guide assembly is provided within the neutron reflector that includes a draft tube draft tube separating a central portion of the reactor core volume from an annular downcomer duct. Fuel salt circulates from the reactor core volume, through the heat exchangers, into the downcomer duct and then back into the reactor core volume.
