A method for enabling automated waste management is described. In one embodiment, data related to an event detected via a sensor coupled to a trash receptacle is received. A waste collection vehicle is configured to collect trash directly from the trash receptacle. The data related to the detected event is processed. A notification is generated based on the processing of the data. In some cases, a notification based on a determination of a volume of trash within the trash receptacle is generated, where the volume is determined via a ranging sensor. A notification is generated based on a determination of a weight of the trash within the trash receptacle, where the weight is determined via a load sensor.

A food processing system includes a food slicing machine having a control arrangement for regulating a thickness of slices cut by the machine so that they are cut according to a current value of a slice size parameter. An under-weight signal is generated which is responsive to generation of any under-weight groups of slices by the slicing machine, and an end-of-line weighing device monitors the weight of groups of slices outputted by the system and generates an end-of-line weight signal responsive thereto. The system identifies any under-weight groups of slices so that their weight can be increased by addition of a further slice before being outputted by the system. The control arrangement receives the two signals and determines the value of the slice size parameter having regard to them. The slice size parameter may be adjusted to minimize give-away by the system.

A coating composition system for weighing and formulating coating compositions comprises a physical enclosure enclosing an electronic coating composition networking device. The electronic coating composition networking device comprises a local communication interface configured to receive a physical connector from an electronic scale and a network communication interface configured to communicate with an internet gateway. Additionally, at least one sensor may be integrated within the electronic coating composition networking device. The electronic coating composition networking device also receives, through the local communication interface, a mass variable from the electronic scale and a sensor variable from the at least one sensor. The electronic coating composition networking device then generates a network data structure comprising the sensor variable and the mass variable. The electronic coating composition networking device communicates, through the internet gateway, the network data structure to a remote server.
