A method of using an aerosol-generating device having a reusable heating element and a battery to provide energy for heating the heating element is provided, the method including steps of: bringing the heating element into proximity to an aerosol-forming substrate; actuating the heating element through a first thermal cycle in which a temperature of the heating element is raised to a first temperature to heat the substrate sufficiently for an aerosol to be formed; removing the heating element from proximity to the substrate; docking the device in a docking station for recharging the battery; and when the device is docked in the docking station, actuating the heating element through a second thermal cycle in which the temperature of the heating element is raised to a second temperature, higher than the first temperature. An aerosol-generating device and an aerosol-generating system are also provided.

In one embodiment, the system further includes a smoking device having a bowl portion with a sharpened free edge that can be used to simultaneously cut organic smoking material within the second compartment and load the cut organic smoking material into the bowl portion. The system may also include a loading funnel and a pushing device for inserting organic smoking material into the container.

The heating element is in electrical communication with a lower connector located below the storage area. A partition defines the bottom of the internal storage area and separates the storage area from the lower connector. The heating device may be two separate pieces, a chamber and a cradle, that are removably connected. The heating element is located in the chamber above the storage area, which is located in the cradle.

Use of the pipe smoking apparatus involves inserting the distal end of the pipe smoking apparatus into the draft hole of a pipe bowl; loading tobacco, tobacco-like substance and/or concentrates so as to surround the helical coil windings; applying a heat source to the tobacco or tobacco-like substance; applying a partial vacuum to the pipe bowl by inhaling or drawing on a pipe; and manipulating the tobacco or tobacco-like substance by manipulating the handle so as to stir and/or lift the contents of a pipe bowl and to clean the pipe when finished.
