Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and techniques for optical detection of analytes (e.g., biomarkers or other objects) using a liquid-core waveguide in which the analytes are suspended in a high-index liquid inside a liquid channel of the waveguide. The term “high-index” may indicate a refractive core index of the carrier liquid that is higher than or equal to that of one or more surrounding cladding layer(s) (e.g., ethylene glycol liquid inside a glass channel). In some embodiments, a method includes illuminating, by a light-source, one or more particles in a liquid-core waveguide, wherein the liquid-core waveguide comprises a first cladding layer having a first index of a refraction, and a hollow core comprising a liquid inside the hollow core, wherein the liquid has a second index of refraction higher than the first index of refraction; and detecting, by a detector, light emitted from the one or more particles.

A field flow fractionator (FFF device) 1 classifies particles in a liquid sample by applying a field to a liquid sample supplied from a sample injection device 5. A detector 6 detects the particles in the liquid sample classified by the FFF device 1. A bypass flow path 8 supplies the liquid sample from the sample injection device 5 to the detector 6 without via the FFF device 1. A rotary valve (flow path switching unit) 4 switches a flow path to guide the liquid sample from the sample injection device 5 to the FFF device 1 or a bypass flow path 8. The bypass flow path 8 is provided with a concentration adjusting device 9 for adjusting the concentration of the liquid sample from the sample injection device 5. In a case where a sample with the same quantity as the sample supplied to the FFF device 1 is supplied to the bypass flow path 8 at the time of analysis, the sample is diluted by the concentration adjusting device 9 such that a detection signal from the detector 6 falls within a dynamic range.

Acoustic cell separation techniques and processes

Beads with functionalized material applied to them are exposed to an acoustic field to trap, retain or pass the beads. The beads may include or be free of ferro magnetic material. The beads may be biocompatible or biodegradable for a host. The size of the beads may vary over a range, and/or be heterogenous or homogenous. The composition of the beads may include high, neutral or low acoustic contrast material. The chemistry of the functionalized material may be compatible with existing processes. The acoustic field may be generated, for example, in an acoustic angled wave device or in an acoustic fluidized bed.

Electromagnetic chip detectors and associated methods of detecting a metallic chip in engine fluid of an engine are provided. The method comprises supplying an electric current to a circuit extending between a first node and a second node to magnetize both a first electrically conductive terminal and a second electrically conductive terminal spaced apart from each other to define a chip-receiving gap therebetween, and detecting a change in resistance across the first node and the second node. The change in resistance is indicative of a capture of the chip by the electromagnetic chip detector. The chip electrically connects the first electrically conductive terminal to the second electrically conductive terminal. The first electrically conductive terminal is electrically connected to the first node. The second electrically conductive terminal is electrically connected to the second node.

A particle detection device includes a detection tube, a light emitter, a light receiver, and a processing unit. The detection tube is for a detection solution to pass through. The light emitter generates a detection light and emits the detection light to the detection solution. The light receiver receives the detection light scattered from the detection solution. The processing unit generates a received light intensity value according to the detection signal generated by the light receiver, and determines whether the received light intensity value is greater than a first threshold value: if greater, generating a detection result of particles; otherwise, generating a detection result of no particles. Then it provides a basis for semiconductor manufacturing companies to evaluate whether the detection solution can be used in a high-precision manufacturing processes, thereby optimizing the manufacturing process and improving the yield rate of the high-precision manufacturing process.

Systems and methods taught herein enable simultaneous forward and side detection of light originating within a microfluidic channel disposed in a substrate. At least a portion of the microfluidic channel is located in the substrate relative to a first side surface of the substrate to enable simultaneous detection paths with respect to extinction (i.e., 0°) and side detection (i.e., 90°). The location of the microfluidic channel as taught herein enables a maximal half-angle for a ray of light passing from a center of the portion of the microfluidic channel through the first side surface to be in a range from 25 to 90 degrees in some embodiments. By placing at least the portion of the microfluidic channel proximate to the side surface of the substrate, a significantly greater proportion of light emitted or scattered from a particle within the microfluidic channel can be collected and imaged on a detector as compared to conventional particle processing chips.
