Provided is an apparatus for measuring particulate matter, the apparatus including an air inflow device configured to receive air including particulate matter particles, two or more light sources configured to respectively emit light of different wavelengths to the air received, a pattern measuring device configured to measure scattering patterns for each wavelength of light based on detecting light that is forward-scattered by the particulate matter particles and light that is back-scattered by the particulate matter particles, and a processor configured to obtain a size of the particulate matter particles and a concentration of the particulate matter particles based on the scattering patterns for each wavelength of light.

Method of optical characterisation of liquids

A method of liquid characterisation using an optical characterisation system. The optical characterisation system comprises an optical element comprising a light source and light detector, and defining a light path extending between the light source and light detector. The detector resolves light intensities at varying wavelengths. The system also comprises a liquid container and a photonic crystal attached to the first container surface and facing the interior. The method comprises: recording a first transmission spectrum, wherein at least part of the first and second container surfaces, the interior containing liquid and the photonic crystal intercept the light path, and the interior intercepts the light path before the photonic crystal, and recording a second transmission spectrum. At least part of the first and second container surfaces, the interior containing liquid and the photonic crystal intercept the light path. The photonic crystal intercepts the light path before the interior.

NETWORKED AIR QUALITY MONITORING SYSTEM

Method and apparatus for measuring the properties of a liquid

A method and an apparatus for measuring the properties of a liquid that exploit the power modulation a laser light beam undergoes due to the retro-reflection of the laser light beam itself towards the laser cavity from which the laser is generated when this laser light is directed towards a transparent conduit through which the liquid for which the properties are to be measured flows, where this power modulation is detected by at least one photodiode arranged downstream of the transparent conduit.

Aspects of the invention include hematology analysis reagents, systems and methods that can be used to preserve blood cell morphology and integrity as well as provide sample integrity and optical clarity to facilitate optical analysis of blood samples. In some embodiments, the reagents include a non-phosphate organic buffer and a sphering surfactant. The pH and osmolality of the reagents may be adjusted to desired ranges. In addition, the reagents can be simply diluted with de-ionized water prior to use.

OPTO-MAGNETOPHORETIC METHOD FOR THE DETECTION OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE

Method for detecting the presence or absence of a biological or chemical substance in a particular sample mixed with a suspension with functionalized magnetic particles, comprising: providing a light source and detector, providing a constant magnetic force perpendicular to the light's propagation direction by applying a constant magnetic field gradient, and with an absolute value which is higher than 0.1 T and measuring the change of the magnetic particle's suspension transparency versus time and comparing it with the time-variation in absence of the targeted biological or chemical substance. The method of the invention allows monitoring the transparency irrespective of the emitted wavelength and particle's optical properties.
