Particulate matter detection
11630037 · 2023-04-18 · ·

A particle sensing device is disclosed for sensing particles entrained in a gas, distribution of particle sizes including a first size range (e.g. PM2.5) and a second size range (e.g. PM10), larger than the first size range. A thermophoretic impulse is applied to the entrained particles. The device has a a first sensor, downstream of the thermophoretic impulse region. The thermophoretic impulse, the flow of gas and gravity combine to cause at least some of the particles to follow respective trajectories within the sampling volume. An interception unit is interposed between the thermophoretic impulse region and the first sensor, to intercept the respective trajectories of particles of the second size range but not respective trajectories of particles of the first size range. The first sensor is located to intercept and detect the respective trajectories of particles of the first size range.

Soot sensor system

A soot sensing system includes a soot sensor having a first element, and circuitry to an amount of soot accumulated on the element and to control heating of the element in response to the soot accumulation. An electrostatic repelling voltage (ERV) may be applied to a sensor/heater element(s) during a contamination prevention mode (CPM) to repel ash and reduce contamination of the sensor. A pulsed heating voltage (PHV) may be applied to the elements during the CPM and a pulsed ERV may be applied to the elements during the “off” period of the PHV. All voltage to the elements may be turned off during the CPM and the elements may be floating/ground. A PHV may be applied to the elements during the CPM and no voltage may be applied to the elements during the “off” period of the PHV. A heating voltage may be applied to the elements during a CPM corresponding to a cold start.

This disclosure provides techniques for detecting and/or inhibiting corrosion of a distribution/recirculation network for a fluid, e.g., an aqueous matrix (liquid). For example, the disclosed techniques can be used to measure and/or predict degeneration of pipes, solder joints and various other plumbing fixtures in a water distribution network or heat transfer recirculation network caused as a function of variation in environmental parameters. In one embodiment, a system builds a database by measuring metal corrosion (e.g., from lead or copper pipe, solder joint or other type of plumbing vessel or fixture) and correlating degradation of a layer of protective scale and/or metal concentrations present with measured environmental parameters; later, as conditions vary, the database (or associated correlation weights/values) may be used to predict degradation of scale health and/or corrosion stemming from short and/or long term water conditions, and to effectuate advance mitigation.
