PROCESS AND SYSTEM FOR SAMPLE ANALYSIS
Components resolved in time by a separator accumulate in a sample cell and are analyzed by electromagnetic radiation-based spectroscopic techniques. The sample cell can be configured for multiple path absorption and can be heated. The separator can be a gas chromatograph or another suitable device, for example a distillation-based separator. The method and system described herein can include other mechanical elements, controls, procedures for handling background and sample data, protocols for species identification and/or quantification, automation, computer interfaces, algorithms, software or other features.
HYBRID CAPILLARY/PACKED TRAP AND METHOD OF USE
A hybrid trap including a replaceable open-tubular capillary trap followed by a packed trap is used to collect, preconcentrate, and recover a sample, such as VOCs and SVOCs found in air. The capillary stage prevents losses and carryover of the heavy fraction and can also collect the particles in air that contain the heavier SVOCs, also preventing them from reaching the packed stage. The packed stage traps lighter organic compounds that are not as prone to carryover due to channeling. The ionic species within the collected VOCs and SVOCs at the capillary trap can be converted to volatile compounds that allow gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
Focusing agents and calibration transportability
A thermal desorption tube for chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. The thermal desorption tube includes a sorbent and a plurality of focusing agents loaded at known, relative amounts onto the sorbent. Each focusing agent is a compound that chromatographically elutes within a retention time similar to a retention time of a target analyte and has a mass spectrum similar to a mass spectrum of the target analyte. The thermal desorption tube is configured to be further loaded with a sample having the target analyte.

The capillary and packed traps together provide quantitative recovery of compounds boiling from as low as 50 C. to as high as 600 C. The sample can be directly desorbed onto the GC column, which avoids losses and contamination caused by other approaches that thermally desorb samples through transfer lines and rotary valves more remote to the GC oven.
THERMAL EXTRACTION GEOCHEMICAL METHOD FOR MEASUREMENT OF OIL IN PLACE AND MOVABLE OIL IN LIQUID RICH FINE GRAIN ROCKS
A method for analyzing total oil in place and fraction that is movable oil in a fine gain rock formation includes monitoring thermal extraction of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon compounds from a sample of a subsurface formation by heating the sample. The heating has a selected initial temperature, and a temperature increase at a selected rate to a final temperature. The extracted hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon compounds are passed through a capillary column to a flame ionization detector. Types of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon compounds and relative fractional amounts of each type thereof are determined from the sample by analyzing a chemical thermogram generated by the flame ionization detector.

Method and system for solventless calibration of volatile or semi-volatile compounds
A system for solventless calibration of volatile or semi-volatile compounds and methods thereof. The system includes a fluid path having a first end configured to be operably coupled to a fluid source and a second end configured to be operably coupled to the analytical instrument. A solid sorbent is disposed along the fluid path and is configured to absorb an analyte. The flow of fluid along the fluid path from the first end to the second end causes absorbed analyte to be desorbed from the solid sorbent at a desired concentration to the instrument.

TRACE DETECTION OF LOW VOLATILE SUBSTANCES USING INDUCTIVE HEATING OF A SAMPLING SWAB
An example system includes a conductive sampling swab and a thermal desorber comprising an induction coil. The thermal desorber defines an opening configured to receive at least a portion of the conductive sampling swab within an internal volume defined by the induction coil, and the thermal desorber is configured to inductively heat the sampling swab to a temperature sufficient to vaporize a sample material disposed on the sampling swab.
