A tensioning strap, the stiffness of which can be varied in a wide range of values, is provided. The tensioning strap comprises a base body, made as a strip of flexible material, and one or more stiffening elements applied to the base body. The stiffening elements can be applied to the base body in a permanent, non-removable manner, or, in a removable manner. In this way, the stiffening elements can be applied, removed, displaced, replaced with stiffening elements of different types depending on the needs. The tensioning strap finds particular, though non-exclusive, application in the making of a system of tensioning straps for a system for supporting a human body or a segment thereof.

SEAT WITH SHAPE MEMORY MATERIAL MEMBER ACTUATION

A vehicle seat can be configured to provide support to a vehicle occupant in conditions when lateral acceleration is experienced. Shape memory material members can be operatively positioned with respect to a seat portion of the vehicle seat. The shape memory material members can be selectively activated by an activation input. When activated, the shape memory material members can engage a seat pan so as to cause the seat pan to tilt in a respective lateral direction. As a result, a seat cushion supported by the seat pan can also tilt in the respective lateral direction. The seat cushion can be tilted in a lateral direction that is opposite to the direction of the lateral acceleration. Thus, the effects of lateral acceleration felt by a seat occupant can be reduced. The shape memory material members can be selectively activated based on vehicle speed, steering angle, and/or lateral acceleration.

Automatically adjusting comfort system

An automatically adjusting comfort method includes measuring pressure applied by a user via a pressure-sensor array, determining a pressure profile based on measurements from the pressure-sensor array, comparing the pressure profile to a first limit, determining a cumulative pressure profile over a predetermined duration, comparing the cumulative pressure profile to a second limit, and adjusting one or more of a plurality of adjusting mechanisms configured to alter the pressure profile for increased comfort of the user when the pressure profile exceeds the first limit or the second limit. An automatically adjusting comfort system includes a pressure-sensor array communicatively coupled to a controller for determining a cumulative pressure profile over time, and a plurality of adjusting mechanisms configured to alter the pressure profile to increase a user's comfort, wherein the controller automatically adjusts one or more of the plurality of adjusting mechanisms based on the cumulative pressure profile.
