Shear velocity radial profiling based on flexural mode dispersion
A method is disclosed for radiaiiy profiling shear velocities of flexural wave modes in a formation. The method includes establishing sensitivity kernels with two non-dimensionalized parameters and using said sensitivity kernels to perform an inversion for radial shear wave velocity profiles. This method may be used for LWD, MWD, or wireline logging operations.
Identifying characteristics of a subterranean region using vector-based wavefield separation of seismic data from the subterranean region
Methods and systems, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium can be used for identifying primary-wave (P-wave) and secondary-wave (S-wave) characteristics of an underground formation by separating P-wave and S-wave modes of seismic data generated by applying a seismic source to a subterranean region of a geological area. Particle motion vectors of a P-wave are parallel to a propagation vector of the P-wave, whereas particle motion vectors of an S-wave are perpendicular to a propagation vector of the S-wave. The parallel and perpendicular relationship between the motion and propagation vectors of the respective P- and S-waves provide a basis for separating P- and S-wave components from a wavefield. The separation methodology extracts P-wave components and S-wave components from the wavefield based on an estimated angle between propagation vectors and wave motion vectors for the wavefield.
Automatic seismic wave detector and valve controller
A valve controller device for controlling a set of one or more solenoid valves is provided. The valve controller comprises an accelerometer for making acceleration measurements in three directions comprising acceleration measurements in a vertical direction. The valve controller comprises a processing unit that determines the arrival of seismic P-waves when the ratio of vibrations' power in the vertical direction with respect to a sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a first threshold. The processing unit then determines the arrival of seismic S-waves when the vector sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a second threshold. The processing unit then determines the arrival of seismic surface waves when the vector sum of the vibrations' power in the three directions exceeds a third threshold. The processing unit then sends one or more signals to close the set of solenoid valves.

The system also includes a processing unit in communication with the at least one seismic receiver. The processing unit analyzes the collected seismic survey data to identify subterranean conduit coordinates for use with conduit plugging operations.
MULTI-WAVEFIELD SEISMIC DETECTION METHOD AND SYSTEM BASED ON CONSTRUCTION NOISE OF SHIELD MACHINE
A multi-wavefield seismic detection method and system based on construction noise of a shield machine. Multi-wavefield seismic information such as a body wave and a surface wave formed during propagation of a seismic wave generated by excitation in a stratum is obtained by using noise information caused by the construction of a shield machine as a seismic source, a stratum velocity model along a tunnel is constructed through joint inversion, and reflection wave information or the like is used for migration imaging, to eventually implement relatively accurate detection of a geological condition in front of a tunnel face of shield construction.
METHODS TO ESTIMATE FORMATION SHEAR WAVE SLOWNESS FROM MULTI-FIRINGS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACOUSTIC SOURCES AND MULTI-MODE DISPERSION ESTIMATION SYSTEMS
Methods to estimate formation shear wave slowness from multi-firings of different types of acoustic sources and multi-mode dispersion estimation systems are presented. The method includes obtaining waveform data of waves traversing through a downhole formation, where the waves are generated from multi-firings of different types of acoustic sources. The method also includes performing a multimode dispersion analysis of the waveform data for each firing of the multi-firings, and removing one or more tool waves generated from the multi-firings. The method further includes determining a formation type of the formation the waves traverse based properties of the waves and determining an initial shear wave slowness estimate of the waves. The method further includes generating a modeling of the waves, and reducing a mismatch between the modeling of the waves and a slowness dispersion of the waves to improve the modeling of the waves.
MULTIPOLE SHEAR WAVE SPLITTING
Downhole measurement systems and methods include deploying a bottomhole assembly having a multipole transmitter into a formation and transmitting acoustic signals into the formation. The multipole transmitter is of order n ≥ 2. Acoustic signals are received at respective receivers that are circumferentially aligned with the multipole transmitter, and are axially offset from the multipole transmitter, and axially offset from each other. The order of the first and second multipole receivers are equal to the order of the multipole transmitter. A controller is used to obtain first and second acoustic multipole data from the first and second multipole receivers at one or more azimuthal angles of a rotation of the bottomhole assembly in a formation during a drilling operation. Acoustic azimuthal anisotropy of the formation is determined from the first acoustic multipole data and the second acoustic multipole data.

A method of determining a shear-wave attenuated vertical component vertical seismic profile (VSP) dataset is disclosed. The method includes, obtaining a multi-component VSP dataset, including a vertical and a horizontal component, transforming the vertical component into a vertical spectrum and the horizontal component into a horizontal spectrum, and designing a band-pass filter based, at least in part, on an energetic signal of the horizontal spectrum. The method further includes determining a muted vertical amplitude spectrum by applying the pass-band filter to an amplitude spectrum of the vertical spectrum, determining an estimated noise model based on the muted vertical amplitude spectrum and the vertical spectrum; and determining the shear-wave attenuated vertical component VSP dataset by adaptively subtracting the estimated noise model from the vertical component of the multi-component VSP dataset. A system including a seismic source, a plurality of seismic receivers, and a seismic processor for executing the method is disclosed.
