Laser exposure head with reduced leakage

A laser exposure system includes an electrically-controlled diffraction grating which can be controlled to be in a first state where the incident light beam is undiffracted and a second state where the incident light beam is diffracted into a plurality of light beams including a zero-order light beam and first and second diffracted light beams. An aperture structure which passes the first and second diffracted light beams while blocking the zero-order light beam. A polarization rotator rotates a polarization state of the second diffracted light, and a polarization beam combiner combines the first diffracted light beam and the polarization-rotated second diffracted light beam onto a common path forming a combined light beam. An optical element focuses the combined light beam onto an imaging medium. A controller controls the state of the electrically-controlled diffraction grating in accordance with pixel data to form a printed image.

Optical filter with light source

An apparatus comprising a switchable optical filter comprising a layer of switchable material, the switchable material comprising a photochromic/thermochromic, a photochromic/photochromic, or a photochromic/electrochromic compound; a first light source providing light of a wavelength that causes the switchable material to transition from a faded state to a dark state, or a dark state to a faded state; and a switch for controlling activation of the first light source

Optical three-port fork-like circulator based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal with a triangular lattice

Provided a two-dimensional photonic crystal device in which are inserted three waveguides and one resonant cavity by the creation of linear and local defects. Due to the photonic band gap related to the photonic crystal, electromagnetic signals are confined to the interior of waveguides and resonant cavity. By exciting dipole modes in the resonant cavity, with orientation that depends on the intensity of the applied DC magnetic field, the present circulator device can provide the nonreciprocal transmission of signals in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions. It can fulfill the isolation function and it is fork-shaped, providing greater flexibility in the design of integrated optical communication systems.

Apparatus, systems, and methods for biomedical imaging and stimulation

A multi-channel optical imaging and stimulation system includes a light source to deliver light beams into a light guide. Different light beams are coupled into different spatial modes supported by the light guide. The light guide includes multiple segments, each of which defines a window to couple a specified group of spatial modes out of the light guide to illuminate or stimulate a target. Light reflected, scattered, or emitted by the target is also collected by the windows in the light guide. The light collected by different windows is detected by different pixels of a detector, thereby creating a correspondence between the pixel location and the spatial location of site at which the light is collected. An image of the target is then reconstructed based on this correspondence.
