SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR IMPLEMENTING SELECTIVE ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY FILTERING OBJECTS AND COATINGS USING SELECTABLY TRANSMISSIVE ENERGY SCATTERING LAYERS
A system and method are provided for forming energy filter layers or shutter components, including energy scattering layers that are actively electrically switchable. The energy filters or shutter components are operable between at least a first mode in which the layers, and thus the presentation of the shutter components, appear substantially transparent when viewed from an energy/light incident side, and a second mode in which the layers, and thus the presentation of the energy filters or shutter components, appear opaque to the incident energy impinging on the energy incident side. The differing modes are selectable by electrically energizing, differentially energizing and/or de-energizing electric fields in a vicinity of the energy scattering layers. Refractive indices of transparent particles, and the transparent matrices in which the particles are fixed, are tunable according to the applied electric fields. The energy scattering layers may conceal a sensor such as a camera or photovoltaic cell.

Reference calibration for an adaptive optics system
A method of determining a reference calibration setting for an adaptive optics system (1) comprising a detecting device (8) for detecting light from an object (5); and at least one controllable wavefront modifying device (9) arranged such that light from the object (5) passes via the wavefront modifying device (9) to the detecting device (8). The method comprises the steps of: arranging (100) a light-source between the object (5) and the wavefront modifying device (9) to provide a reference light beam to the detecting device (8) via the wavefront modifying device; for each of a plurality of orthogonal wavefront modes of the wavefront modifying device: controlling (101) the wavefront modifying device to vary a magnitude of the orthogonal wavefront mode over a predetermined number of magnitude settings; acquiring (102) a series of readings of the detecting device, each reading corresponding to one of the magnitude settings; determining (103) a quality metric value indicative of an information content of the reading for each reading in the series of readings, resulting in a series of quality metric values; and determining (106) a reference parameter set for the wavefront modifying device corresponding to an optimum quality metric value based on the series of quality metric values.
Reflective color display based on tunable sub-wavelength high contrast gratings
A sub-pixel unit for a reflective display includes a color filter including a tunable high contrast grating. The tunable high contrast grating reflects light within a first range of wavelengths, and the sub-pixel unit can exist in a first state and a second state, the first state reflecting at least one of (i) light within a different range of wavelengths, and (ii) light of a different intensity level, than the second state.
Lighting apparatus capable of switching between transmission and two reflection states
A lighting apparatus comprising a light source which emits light with predetermined light distribution in a fixed direction, and an optical element which is arranged in such a manner that at least part of light emitted from the light source inputs to the optical element, and can perform switching to a transmission state in which the light is transmitted, a first reflection state in which the light is reflected in a first direction, and a second reflection state in which the light is reflected in a second direction different from the first direction.

CAMERA WITH LIGHT VALVE OVER SENSOR ARRAY
A camera includes a sensor array including a plurality of individually addressable sensor elements, each of the plurality of sensor elements responsive to incident light over a broad wavelength band. Covering the sensor array is a light valve switchable electronically between closed and open states. The light valve is configured to, in the closed state, block light of a stopband and transmit light outside the stopband, and, in the open state, transmit the light of the stopband. An electronic controller of the camera is configured to switch the light valve from the closed to the open state and, synchronously with switching the light valve, address the sensor elements of the sensor array.
