The torso is generally of a higher weight in comparison to the combined weight of the head and neck. Therefore, the mechanical properties - i.e., bulk moduli - of the materials used to construct the torso support, the neck and head support, and the underpinning underlay are independently formulated to provide appropriate levels of individual firmness, and to enable the torso support and the neck and head support to volumetrically compress in lockstep to maintain spinal alignment throughout compression.
