A card reader's motorized transport is controlled by firmware of the reader so as to control a distance that any card can be pulled into the reader during a transaction on a host device. The distance is sufficient enough to allow an embedded chip on the card to be read by a chip read interface but is insufficient to be read by a magnetic read interface. Furthermore, the entire length of the card is prevented from completely passing over the magnetic read interface during the transaction such that any skimmer placed within the reader is physically unable to read the magnetic card information from the magnetic strip of the card. In an embodiment, the firmware is configured to permit only chips from the cards to be read for transactions or configured to turn off chip only reading by permitting both chip reads and magnetic strip reads for each transaction.

An electronic device includes a card interface and a processing module. The card interface is electrically connected to the processing module, and a SIM card or a memory card may be inserted into the card interface. The card interface includes 8 springs, where N>1; when a memory card is inserted into the card interface, the memory card is electrically connected to the processing module; and when a SIM card is inserted into the card interface, the SIM card is electrically connected to the processing module, and one metal pin of the SIM card is electrically connected to a first spring in the N springs and one spring adjacent to the first spring. The processing module is configured to determine, based on at least a level of the first spring, that an inserted card is a SIM card or a memory card.

Card-type connector having heat conductive members extending over terminals thereof

A base of a connector defines an accommodation portion for accommodating a card-type device. The base has holding portions with surfaces directed to the accommodation portion. The holding portions hold held portions of terminals 40. Heat conductive members are provided on the surfaces of the holding portions. The heat conductive members are sandwiched between the card-type device and the holding portions when the card-type device is connected to the connector 10. In this way, heat conductive paths, which include the conductive members, are formed between the card-type device and held portions of the terminals 40.

Dual purpose press-bar and heat sink for high data transfer integrated circuit card reader

Various embodiments provide a dual purpose press-bar and heat sink for an integrated circuit card (ICC) reader. The dual purpose press-bar and heat sink provides two functions. First, the dual purpose press-bar and heat sink conducts and dissipates internal heat generated by a high data transfer ICC inserted in to the ICC reader. Second, the dual purpose press-bar and heat sink ensures that contact pads of the high data transfer ICC create reliable electrical connections with ICC contacts of the ICC reader. As such, the dual purpose press-bar and heat sink simultaneously dissipates heat from a high data transfer ICC and ensures that a high data transfer ICC maintains proper electrical connections with ICC contacts of an ICC reader.
