A particular embodiment can be configured to: receive fisheye image data from at least one fisheye lens camera associated with an autonomous vehicle, the fisheye image data representing at least one fisheye image frame; partition the fisheye image frame into a plurality of image portions representing portions of the fisheye image frame; warp each of the plurality of image portions to map an arc of a camera projected view into a line corresponding to a mapped target view, the mapped target view being generally orthogonal to a line between a camera center and a center of the arc of the camera projected view; combine the plurality of warped image portions to form a combined resulting fisheye image data set representing recovered or distortion-reduced fisheye image data corresponding to the fisheye image frame; generate auto-calibration data representing a correspondence between pixels in the at least one fisheye image frame and corresponding pixels in the combined resulting fisheye image data set; and provide the combined resulting fisheye image data set as an output for other autonomous vehicle subsystems.

In a video capture system, a virtual lens is simulated when applying a crop or zoom effect to an input video. An input video frame is received from the input video that has a first field of view and an input lens distortion caused by a lens used to capture the input video frame. A selection of a sub-frame representing a portion of the input video frame is obtained that has a second field of view smaller than the first field of view. The sub-frame is processed to remap the input lens distortion to a desired lens distortion in the sub-frame. The processed sub-frame is the outputted.

At least one combined image may be created from a plurality of images captured by a plurality of cameras. A sensor unit may receive the plurality of images from the plurality of cameras. At least one processor in communication with the sensor unit may correlate each received image with calibration data for the camera from which the image was received. The calibration data may comprise camera position data and characteristic data. The processor may combine at least two of the received images from at least two of the cameras into the at least one combined image by orienting the at least two images relative to one another based on the calibration data for the at least two cameras from which the images were received and merging the at least two aligned images into the at least one combined image.
