Systems and methods for processing distribution items having unique identifiers affixed thereon. The unique identifiers can include computer readable codes and written alphanumeric strings generated by a user. A system receives the unique identifier and requests payment information from a user, and stores an association between the unique identifier and the payment information, and processes the item according to the payment information.

Example aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method for determining a fee for sending a mailing, comprising the steps of: a) determining the weight and/or the volume of the mailing, b) selecting a three-dimensional body corresponding to the weight and/or the volume of the mailing, c) projecting the three-dimensional body onto the mailing, d) checking whether the three-dimensional body can enclose the mailing, e) if the three-dimensional body cannot enclose the mailing, selecting a larger three-dimensional body and repeating steps c) and d), f) if the three-dimensional body can enclose the mailing, determining the fee for sending the mailing in dependence on the determined weight and/or the volume and the selected three-dimensional body.

Provided is an unmanned mail/courier management system and method which can unmannedly receive a delivery of mail or a courier item, and can unmannedly store and receive a delivered mail or courier item. The system invention provides a configuration that enables a work, which is performed for unmanned reception and storage through interworking between an unmanned reception machine and a management server through a network in the art, to be input through and processed by a user terminal, and thus, does not require construction of a network for interworking with the management server in the unmanned reception machine for implementation thereof, thereby enabling easy installation of the unmanned reception machine, and minimizing a standby time by omitting a procedure of directly inputting in the unmanned reception machine.

A change in the pose of the package dimensioner is detected by background modeling the area of a measurement platform and then determining if a number of points in a scene are different in distance from the background model. Change in the pose can also be detected by comparing a count of support points in a 3D container generated from images taken in a training process with a count of support points in a subsequent images and determining how many support points are different.

In some aspects, the system can include a camera configured to capture an image of the data on the delivery item, a control computer including at least one hardware processor and memory, the control computer being configured to process the image of the data, integrate the image of the data into a label template, and to generate a print file from the label template, and at least one label applicator disposed after the camera relative to a direction of travel of the delivery item on a conveyor, the at least one label applicator being configured to print the label including the data contained in the print file and apply the printed label onto a top surface of the delivery item.

Images of items are evaluated. A first image of the item, having a view of two or more of its surfaces, is captured at a first time. A measurement of at least one dimension of one or more of the surfaces is computed and stored. A second image of the item, having a view of at least one of the two or more surfaces, is captured at a second time, subsequent to the first time. A measurement of the dimension is then computed and compared to the stored first measurement. The computed measurement is evaluated based on the comparison.

The physical dimensions of a parcel are determined by taking a photograph of the parcel with a smart phone camera. An object of known dimensions is included in the photographic image. An App installed on the smart phone calculates the parcel dimensions by reference to the object of know dimensions and displays the result.

A mail item sortation system and method that includes an external controller for culling candidate letters in a mailing job to produce groupings of letters based on industry average weights and/or thicknesses in order to place all the candidate letters going to a single address adjacent to each other, an internal controller, interfaced with the external controller, that utilizes the groupings of letters to manage multiple letter sorters, wherein a specific letter sorter is selected to pair a calculated number of pockets to accommodate the groupings with an actual number of pockets in the selected letter sorter, and a transfer process for moving letters within the letter sorter pockets to a StatementPack machine.

The method can include receiving a mail piece scan image from a mail piece scan image job requestor and selecting one of a plurality of scan mail piece scan image processors to process said mail piece scan image. The mail piece scan image can be transmitted to said one of a plurality of plurality of mail piece scan image processors and a mail piece scan image processing result can be received from said one of a plurality of plurality of mail piece scan image processors. Post-processing operations can be performed based on said mail piece scan image processing result. The mail piece scan image processing result can be transmitted to said mail piece scan image processing requestor.
