More specifically, and without limitation, the present disclosure relates to preparation of a single serve pod in accordance with brewing coffee, tea, and/or other brewing.

BEVERAGE PAD

A beverage pad (100) for use in a beverage preparation machine for preparing a beverage comprises an amount of extractable and/or soluble beverage preparation product in a compacted puck (130) enclosed between two sheets of filtering material (110, 120) sealed to each other at a periphery edge of the pad. A first sheet of the two sheets has a bottom portion, side portion and a first edge portion. A second sheet of the two sheets comprises a central portion and a second edge portion. The edge portions of the sheets are sealed to each other forming the periphery edge of the pad. The side portion, bottom portion and central portion define a space holding the compacted puck (130) of extractable and/or soluble beverage preparation product which has a uniform thickness. The bottom portion and central portion are at least substantially flat and parallel to each other on opposite sides of the compacted puck, and the side portion extends perpendicular from the bottom portion around the compacted puck (130) to the periphery edge.

A portafilter can be mounted on a head of the extraction unit, removing bubbles in the pressure unit by filling the pressure unit with a fluid and controlling the operation of the valve unit, removing bubbles in the extraction unit by filling the extraction unit with a fluid and controlling the operation of the valve unit, extracting espresso by exerting pressure to a fluid contained in the extraction unit by operating the pressure unit, receiving extraction pressure in the extraction unit via a sensor unit, and controlling the operation of the pressure unit on the basis of extraction pressure.

The body has locking channels that mate with locking tabs on the brew pod. The snorkel includes a spout, an engagement member disposed under the spout, and a top hat disposed above the spout. A gasket with means for retaining a filtering means may be disposed between the engagement member and the grounds basket. The coffee maker may include means for lifting the one-piece body away from a heat source used during the brewing process. Such a lifting arrangement may also have a lid with an extension means to extend the lid away from the one-piece body during the brewing process.

The base in inserted into a pod holder and brewing material is placed into the base. A cover may be positioned over the rim, and a lid is attached to the pod holder to sandwich the cover and rim to seal the pod. The cover, if present, is held taut by the lid of the pod holder to facilitate penetration of the cover by a needle to inject water into the pod.

The identification feature may be visual (for example any feature which may be read or a bar code), a readable magnetic strip, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), or any feature able to contain information and provide that information to a reader. The adapter may be configured for known disposable single serving cartridges, and may include one or more needles to puncture the cartridges for use. The identification feature may inform the coffee maker that an adapter carrying a disposable single serving cartridge is in use, and adjust the coffee maker accordingly.
