An apparatus that operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records, includes at least one processor that is in operative connection with a card reader, a check acceptor, a cash dispenser and a display. The at least one processor causes the machine to operate to read card data from a user card, and to cause a determination to be made that the read card data corresponds to an authorized financial account. The at least one processor is operative to cause data to be read from a check and/or cash to be dispensed, and a financial transfer to or from the account corresponding to the value thereof. Machine instructions are output and user transaction inputs can be received through either a primary or an auxiliary touch screen display.

A secure smart safe with a high speed validator configured to accept notes in an orderly stack and deposit them into a storage compartment within the safe in orderly stacks for easy retrieval by a cash in transit (CIT) guard. The storage compartment includes a carousel of cash cassettes each containing an orderly stack of validated notes. The arrangement of multiple cash cassettes around the rotatable carousel offer substantial banknote storage capacity in a tight vertical space designed to fit under a counter in a retail shop.

An item drop box sensor system for detecting items deposited within a drop box may be configured to detect movement of an item deposit tray and to detect items deposited within the drop box. The drop box sensor system may comprise one or more tray movement sensors for detecting movement of the deposit tray, one or more item detection sensors configured to detect items passing into the drop box via the deposit tray, and an onboard controller for selectively activating the various sensors to conserve power and for transmitting data indicative of the status of the drop box to a central server configured for scheduling item pickups for various geographically spaced drop boxes.

The safe has a computing device for receiving a selection from a merchant to exchange cash for change having a total value, and an identification of the denominations of the coins and cash of the change desired. The safe has a secure chamber for receiving cash deposits from the merchant and a sensor for counting the secured cash. The computing device sends an exchange agent the selection from the merchant to exchange the cash with the change, and the identification of the denominations of the change desired. A courier is contacted, retrieves the cash deposited, and exchanges the change for the equal value of cash.

A system, method and devices are provided for conducting retail banking transactions, and more particularly for transacting business with customers of the banking establishment, where those customers make deposits at a deposit box after the retail banking branch locations are closed. The present system, method and devices are implemented to manage logistics of the after hours deposits in retail banking facilities, and include operations of the deposit box, hosting of the transaction management, and data, and managing transactions where a retail banking customer may prestage the transaction prior to arriving at the deposit box location.
