A selection valve for a beverage preparation machine comprises a valve body with a hot water inlet, an air inlet, and at least a first outlet. A selector member is movably mounted relative to the valve body for movement between a first position in which the hot water inlet is in fluid communication with the at least first outlet, and a second position in which both the hot water inlet and the air inlet are in fluid communication with the at least first outlet. A satellite element has a predefined limited amount of free relative movement relative to the selector member for allowing the satellite element to be independently positioned between the first and second positions of the selector member.

An apparatus for production of French press style coffee via a process to immerse and steep coffee grounds in heated water in a non-oil-absorbing environment. Filtering a finished beverage from the steeped mixture through a microperforated non-oil-absorbing filter, where microperforations are sized to achieve sediments levels equivalent to or less than that of traditional French press, and filtration rate is enhanced via any combination of vibratory energy, air pressure, and air flow to the brewed mixture. The microperforated filter may be permanent and reusable, or may be disposable. The disposable filter is preferably made from flexible aluminum foil and recyclable. The apparatus and method support modification of filter size, microperforation size, perforation density, air pressure, air flow and vibratory action to vary beverage filtration rate and finished beverage composition.

The apparatus comprises, in a machine for preparing coffee-based beverages, a panel for selecting the type of beverage to be dispensed into a cup, a hot water generator, an electric pump, a brewing unit, a flow meter located between the electric pump and the brewing unit, the electric pump being provided to feed hot water to the brewing unit, a valve device placed on a hydraulic connection between the electric pump and the brewing unit to shut off or actuate delivery of hot water, an electronic control unit, and a member for weighing the cup and its contents dispensed by the brewing unit. The electronic control unit is configured to shut off delivery of hot water to the brewing unit as the weighing member receives a signal corresponding to the stored stop weight value which corresponds to the total weight of the type of beverage selected on the selection panel of the machine minus the residual weight.

A control device is provided that is configured to heat the heat store of the heating device to a temperature above 100° C. to carry out thermal regeneration, and to open the directional control device one or more times for conducting water or detergent solution through the fluid path of the heating device heated to a high temperature.
