The smart device further comprises a true 3D representation of a user's teeth. The smart toothbrush is arranged to send brushing data to the smart device, and to analyse the brushing data and overlay the brushing data onto the 3D representation of a user's teeth via the display. By providing a true representation of a user's teeth, the system provides a more accurate feedback mechanism to the user, improving the brushing technique of the user.

A method can include providing a user with a cue to clean his/her teeth using a toothbrush; sensing movement, orientation or acceleration of the toothbrush; generating a musical reward for the user based on sensed movement, orientation or acceleration of the toothbrush; and communicating the musical reward to the user.

The method includes the steps of: (i) receiving (330), from a sensor (28) of the oral cleaning device, data about a plurality of orientations of the oral cleaning device within the user's mouth during a cleaning session; (ii) extracting (340), from the received data, information about one or more stable orientations of the oral cleaning device within the user's mouth during the cleaning session, where a stable orientation is an orientation of the oral cleaning device maintained by the user for a period of time above a threshold; (iii) fitting (350) the information about the one or more stable orientations of the oral cleaning device to one or more expected orientations; and (iv) providing (360) feedback to the user about the cleaning session based on an analysis of the fitted one or more stable orientations.

The controller is arranged to adjust the vibration produced by the vibration means in dependence on the feedback signal. The user interface receives from the user a parameter selection for each of the challenge parameters, each combination of parameter selections having a corresponding brushing expectation and point value. The electronic device receives brushing data from a user toothbrush indicative of user brushing activity, and determines, based on the brushing data, whether the user satisfied the brushing expectation corresponding with the combination of parameter selections. Upon determining that the user satisfied the brushing expectation, the user interface displays that the corresponding point value has been awarded to the user.

In one embodiment, the invention can be a system for determining toothbrush effectiveness, the system comprising a data capture subsystem comprising at least one sensor and configured to generate brushing data during a participant brushing session directed entirely by the participant. A brushing simulation subsystem includes a robotic arm configured to hold a toothbrush, and receive from at least one processor instructions for a motion to be carried out by the robotic arm. The motion of the robotic arm causes the toothbrush to carry out an automated brushing session upon the artificial teeth, the motion of the robotic arm being based on the brushing data captured during the participant brushing session. The at least one processor is further configured to determine an effectiveness of the toothbrush based on the substance determined to be removed from artificial teeth during an automated brushing session.
