The lighting controller includes a headlight controlling module for turning the headlights off when the illuminance is above a first threshold, and turning the headlights on when the illuminance is the first threshold or below, and a display device controlling module for controlling the luminance of the display device to a first set value when the illuminance is above a second threshold, and controlling the luminance of the display device to a second set value when the illuminance is the second threshold or below, the second threshold being lower than the first threshold, the second set value being lower than the first set value.

The rendering device is to render a sequence of frames for display at a frame rate and to set an illumination configuration to be applied by the display device during a frame period for each frame of the sequence of frames based on the frame rate. The illumination configuration controls at least one of an illumination level and a duration for an illumination strobe, and at least one of an illumination level for an illumination fill preceding the illumination strobe in the frame period and an illumination level for an illumination fill following the illumination strobe in the frame period. The display device is to receive a representation of the illumination configuration from the rendering device and apply the illumination configuration during a frame period for each frame of the sequence of frames to display the frame.

Techniques, devices, and systems disclosed herein include detecting a vertical synchronization (VSYNC) signal cycle, determining a high frequency trigger pulse based on detecting an illumination component's pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, the high frequency trigger pulse corresponding to the illumination component's deactivation times, receiving a delay time period and activating a first sensor, at a first time, within the VSYNC signal cycle, the first time determined based on the high frequency trigger pulse and the delay time period. The first sensor may sense a first sensor reading and may be deactivated after being activated. A display setting may be adjusted based at least on the first sensor reading and the illumination component may be activated after the first sensor is deactivated.

A liquid crystal panel (32) for adjusting transparency/light-emission adjusts, for each pixel, a ratio between transmitted light-source light and ambient light by respectively controlling a polarization direction of a reflected polarization component of the light-source light irradiated to a reflection-type polarization plate (20) from a light guide plate (180) and a polarization direction of a transmitted polarization component of the ambient light incident to the reflection-type polarization plate (20) from a rear surface side of the display, based on transparent/light-emitting pixel information. Accordingly, when the image display device is viewed from the front surface side of the display, an image is seen for each pixel, a background is transparently seen, or the background is seen so as to be superimposed on the image. Since it is not necessary to attach the image display device to a case filled with light, the image display device is widely used without limitation of use.

System, method, and computer program product for combining low motion blur and variable refresh rate in a display

A system, method, and computer program product are provided for combining low motion blur and variable refresh rate in a display. In one embodiment, a hold-type display is operated in a first mode of operation where the hold-type display is dynamically refreshed such that the hold type display handles updates to image frames at unpredictable times and where for each of the image frames a backlight of the hold-type display is activated for an entire duration of display of the image frame. Additionally, it is determined that at least one predefined condition has been met. Further, in response to the determination, the hold-type display is operated in a second mode of operation where the hold-type display is statically refreshed such that the hold-type display handles updates to image frames at regular intervals and where for each of the image frames the backlight of the hold-type display is flashed.

SYSTEM FOR DISPLAYING INFORMATION TO A USER

The invention relates to a system for displaying information to a user, comprising:

an emission device arranged to emit light so as to display information to a user, the emission device being adapted to emit the light in a pulsed manner so that the intensity of the light varies between a high value and a low value,

a selective viewing device comprising a panel, the panel being adapted so that the user can view the light which is emitted by the emission device through that panel so as to visually perceive the information being displayed, the panel having a variable transparency which can be varied between a state of high transparency and a state of low transparency,

the system being adapted to synchronize the emission device and the selective viewing device so that the states of the emission device emitting light at a high-intensity value and the states of the panel of the selective viewing device of high transparency overlap in time,

the emission device being adapted so that the light is emitted in a pulsed manner with a duty cycle of less than or equal to 1/10, wherein the panel of the selective viewing device is adapted to operate at essentially the same duty cycle.
