A magnetic recording head includes a write pole including an end proximal to a media-facing surface of the magnetic recording head, a return pole disposed a distance from the write pole in a down-track dimension of the magnetic recording head, and a writer coil configured to produce a magnetic flux in the write pole. The writer coil includes a first segment and a second segment. The first segment is disposed proximal to the end of the write pole and between the write pole and the return pole. The second segment is electrically coupled to the first segment. A thickness of the second segment in the down-track dimension is greater than a thickness of the first segment in the down-track dimension.

HEATSINK STRUCTURES FOR HEAT-ASSISTED MAGNETIC RECORDING HEADS

A recording head comprises a write pole extending to an air-bearing surface. A near-field transducer is positioned proximate a first side of the write pole in a down-track direction. A heatsink structure is proximate the near-field transducer and positioned between the near-field transducer and the write pole. The heatsink structure extends beyond the near-field transducer in a cross-track direction and extends in a direction normal to the air-bearing surface.

MAGNETIC WRITE HEAD WITH FLUX BLOCKADE STRUCTURE

An apparatus such as a device having a writer for magnetic media has a trailing pole piece having a portion adjacent a write gap, the portion having a throat height (h1) of between about 100 and about 800 nm, and an aspect ratio of thickness/throat height (t1/h1) in a range of 0.5 and 2.

Segmented magnetic recording write head for writing timing-based servo patterns

An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a first module having a plurality of first write transducers, and a plurality of second modules each having a second write transducer. Planes of deposition of write gaps of the second write transducers are oriented at an angle of greater than 4 degrees relative to planes of deposition of write gaps of the first write transducers. An apparatus according to another embodiment includes a plurality of first modules each having a first write transducer, and a plurality of second modules each having a second write transducer. Planes of deposition of write gaps of the second write transducers are oriented at an angle of greater than 4 degrees relative to planes of deposition of write gaps of the first write transducers.

MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND MAGNETIC MEMORY DEVICE

A magnetic recording medium includes a substrate; a lower base layer formed on the substrate; and a (001) oriented L1.sub.0 magnetic layer formed on the lower base layer and including a first magnetic layer formed on the lower base layer and having a granular structure of magnetic grains and a grain boundary portion, the grain boundary portion containing C, and a second magnetic layer formed on the first magnetic layer and having a granular structure of magnetic grains and a grain boundary portion, the grain boundary portion containing oxide or nitride, the second magnetic layer further containing one or more elements selected from a group consisting of Mg, Ni, Zn, Ge, Pd, Sn, Ag, Re, Au and Pb as an additive.

Selective heat-assisted removal of head over-coat and media over-coat

Provided herein is an apparatus including a head over-coat and a depleted region in the head over-coat. A media over-coat is deposited in the depleted region. A near field transducer is adjacent to the head over-coat, wherein the near field transducer combusts the deposited media over-coat.

Tape head having sensors proximate to an edge

An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a first edge, and a second edge. A sensor is located in a thin film region of the module. The sensor has a free layer. A distance from the first edge to the free layer is less than a distance from the second edge to the free layer. A method according to another embodiment includes detecting a distance between a free layer of a sensor and an edge closest thereto. The free layer is positioned between an upper shield and the edge. A wrap angle is selected based on the detected distance for inducing tenting of a magnetic recording tape in a region above the free layer when the magnetic recording tape moves over the module.
