20210272588 · 2021-09-02 ·

A magnetic disk device includes a disk has a first area in which data is written by first recording method such that a plurality of tracks are spaced from each other, and a second area written with data by second recording method such that adjacent tracks partially overlap, a head, and a controller. The controller is configured to control the head to write data to a track of the first or second area by the first or second recording method, and perform a retry operation when the data has not been written to the track successfully, and repeat the retry operation until the data is written successfully up to a predetermined number of times. When data is being written to a track of the first area, the retry operation is repeated up to a different number of times depending on a location of the track within the first area.

The magnetic recording head comprises a first write head, a second write head, at least one read head, and a thermal fly height control element. The first write head is a wide writing write head comprising a first main pole and a first trailing shield. The second write head a narrow writing write head comprising a second main pole, a trailing gap, a second trailing shield, and one or more side shields. The first main pole has a shorter height and a greater width than the second main pole. The second main pole has a curved or U-shaped surface disposed adjacent to the trailing gap. The thermal fly height control element and the at least one read head are aligned with a center axis of the second main pole of the second write head.

Write transducers having high moment layer

An apparatus, according to one embodiment, includes: an array of write transducers. Each of the write transducers include: a first write pole having a pole tip extending from a media facing side of the first write pole, and a second write pole having a pole tip extending from a media facing side of the second write pole. Each of the write transducers also include a nonmagnetic write gap between the pole tips of the write poles, and a first high moment layer between the write gap and the pole tip of the second write pole. The first high moment layer further includes a higher magnetic moment than a magnetic moment of the pole tip of the second write pole. Other systems, methods, and computer program products are described in additional embodiments.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording device with multiple writers that write to the same disk surface at different time periods

A first heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) writer writes to a surface of a magnetic disk using during an initial time period. A second HAMR writer is configured to write to the surface but not during the initial time period. The initial time period extends from a first time when the disk drive is first used to a second time when a near-field transducer of the first HAMR writer reaches a first wear threshold. During a subsequent time period after the initial time period, to the surface of the disk is written to using the second HAMR writer and not the first HAMR writer.

Shared disk drive component system

A server box embodiment is disclosed that generally comprises an array of dummy HDDs that share a common set of universal disk drive components in a master components module, or power module. Each dummy HDDs is constructed without expensive onboard chipsets that control the normal functionality of a standard HDD. By sharing expensive chipsets in a master components module (power module) money can be saved in building and selling the dummy HDD server. Embodiments envision a power module possessing the needed chipset functionality that is missing in a dummy HDD. The power module can be made to move from dummy HDD to dummy HDD supplying the necessary chipset in a shared manner when data is being stored or retrieved for client or end-user.

A PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) write head configured for microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) includes a spin-torque oscillator (STO) and trailing shield formed of high moment magnetic material (HMTS). By patterning the STO and the HMTS in a simultaneous process the HMTS and the STO layer are precisely aligned and have very similar cross-track widths. In addition, the write gap at an off-center location has a thickness that is independent from its center-track thickness and the write gap total width can have a flexible range whose minimum value is the same width as the STO width.
