Data storage device adapting read element usage

A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of data tracks, wherein each data track comprises a plurality of data sectors and the head comprises a first read element and a second read element. When a first read command is received from a host to read a plurality of data sectors from the disk, the first read element is used to read a first data sector of the first read command, and when the first read element fails to recover the first data sector of the first read command, the second read element is used to read a second data sector of the first read command.

Data storage device using high and low frequencies AC heat produce position-error-signals for head contact detection

A data storage device may have increased signal-to-noise ratio contact detection by employing a transducing head associated with a data storage medium each connected to a controller. The transducing head can have an alternating current heater excited to a first frequency for a first revolution of the data storage medium and to a different second frequency for a second revolution of the data storage medium. The second frequency may produce lateral transducing head motion as a result of physical contact of the transducing head with the data storage medium. The controller can issue a contact status in response to comparing a first plurality of position error signals logged during the first frequency to a second plurality of position error signals logged during the second frequency.

MOVEABLE RAMP FOR DATA STORAGE DEVICE

A data storage device includes a ramp configured to support at least one head in the data storage device, and a movement mechanism coupled to the ramp and configured to move the ramp from a first position to a second position by at least one of expansion or contraction of at least a portion of the movement mechanism. The data storage device further includes a ramp motion control module operably coupled to the movement mechanism. The ramp motion control module is configured to provide the movement mechanism with a first control signal that causes the movement mechanism to move the ramp from the first position to the second position. The data storage device additionally includes a latch configured to hold the ramp.

RETRACTABLE RAMP FOR DATA STORAGE DEVICES

A data storage device includes a ramp that supports at least one head, and a retraction mechanism that moves the ramp from a non-retracted position to a retracted position. The movement of the ramp is enabled by at least one of expansion or contraction of at least a portion of the retraction mechanism. The data storage device further includes a ramp retraction control module operably coupled to the retraction mechanism. The ramp retraction control module provides the retraction mechanism with a first control signal that causes the retraction mechanism to move the ramp from the non-retracted position to the retracted position.

Soft Mount Voice Coil Motor Assembly

The present disclosure generally relates to a voice coil motor (VCM) yoke assembly mounted to an actuator block for a data storage device. One or more fastening mechanisms couple the VCM assembly to the actuator block. The fastening mechanisms are coupled to the VCM assembly by one or more soft mounts. The one or more soft mounts reduce undesirable movement of the magnetic recording head by spacing the VCM assembly from the actuator block, yet still ensuring the VCM assembly is properly coupled to the actuator block.

Data storage device using windowed delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter in digital current control loop

A data storage device is disclosed comprising a voice coil motor (VCM) configured to actuate a head over a disk. The data storage device further comprises control circuitry comprising a digital current control loop including a windowed delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) configured to control the VCM. A vibration of the data storage device is measured, and at least one of a gain or a window of the windowed delta-sigma ADC is configured based on the measured vibration.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk apparatus includes a magnetic disk, a magnetic head, and a controller. The magnetic disk includes a plurality of tracks. The magnetic head performs read/write from/to the plurality of tracks. The controller controls, in a first case in which, during execution of write to a first track among the plurality of tracks, a position of the magnetic head is displaced from a target position corresponding to the first track toward a second track, and a first distance exceeds a first threshold, write to the second track under a condition different from a condition in a second case in which the first distance is less than the first threshold. The second track is a track different from the first track among the plurality of tracks. The first distance is the distance between the target position and the position of the magnetic head.
