BACKGROUND CORRECTION FOR BIREFRINGENCE MEASUREMENTS
One example provides a computer-implemented method for reading data stored as birefringence values in a storage medium. The method comprises acquiring an image of a voxel of the storage medium, applying a first low-pass filter with a first cutoff frequency to the image of the voxel to obtain a first background image, applying a second low-pass filter with a second cutoff frequency to the image of the voxel to obtain a second background image, the second cutoff frequency being different than the first cutoff frequency, determining an enhanced background image from the first background image and the second background image, determining birefringence values for the enhanced background image, determining birefringence values for the image of the voxel, and correcting the birefringence values for the image of the voxel based upon the birefringence values for the enhanced background image.

A method for forming birefringent voxels comprises simultaneously generating a first seed pulse and a first data pulse. The first seed pulse and the first data pulse are spatially-separated laser pulses having different amplitudes. The first seed pulse is focused at a first seed location, and the data pulse is focused at a first data location. The first seed location and the first data location are separated by a predetermined distance along a scan path, with the first seed location being ahead of the first data location. Subsequently, a second seed pulse and a second data pulse are generated, and focused at a second seed location and second data location, respectively. The second seed and data locations are separated by the predetermined distance. The second data location is the same as the first seed location, resulting in formation of a birefringent voxel.
Optical pickup device and optical drive device
An optical pickup device includes a semiconductor laser that emits a laser beam, and an object lens that concentrates the laser beam emitted from the semiconductor laser on an optical disc. In this optical pickup device, an optical axis of the object lens is inclined with respect to an optical axis of the laser beam that is incident on the object lens so as to generate flares caused by coma aberration on an entrance side in a forward direction of pits of the optical disc.
Optical information recording device and optical information recording method
The optical information recording device includes a light source configured to emit a laser beam, an optical element configured to divide the laser beam into the reference beam and the signal beam, an angle control unit configured to control an angle of incidence of the reference beam on the optical information recording medium, and a phase control unit configured to control a phase of at least one of the signal beam and the reference beam in a recording period, wherein the angle control unit controls an angle interval so that a position of a 1st null of an adjacent page of the signal beam is fixed, and wherein the phase control unit controls the phase of the signal beam or the reference beam so that a phase difference between the adjacent pages is a predetermined value.

Optical-information recording/reproducing apparatus and optical-information recording/reproducing method
An optical-information recording/reproducing apparatus of the present invention is capable of carrying out position detection of a reproduction image even if reproduction image data with incomplete alignment marks (markers) is obtained. A relative correlation value is calculated from a first correlation value retained by a first correlation-value retaining unit and a second correlation value retained by a second correlation-value retaining unit, and pass/fail of a position detection result of the marker is judged according to the relative correlation value. The pass/fail of the position detection result is judged by mutually comparing the detection positions of the markers judged as passes by the relative correlation-value judgement, the positions of the markers judged as fail by the relative correlation-value judgement or the mutual position judgement is complemented, and the position of two-dimensional data is detected based on the pass-judged markers and the complemented markers.
