Data storage system including movable carriage

An apparatus with a housing which stores a plurality of data storage magazines, where each data storage magazine includes a plurality of data storage devices. The housing includes a movable carriage, the movable carriage configured to selectively couple a set of data storage devices held by a particular data storage magazine to a host device. The housing also includes a motor configured to move the movable carriage within the housing to enable the movable carriage to communicatively couple the set of data storage devices held by the particular data storage magazine to the host device.

MAGNETICALLY REPOSITIONABLE CASSETTES WITHIN A DATA STORAGE DRIVE

The presently disclosed technology is directed to maximizing cleanliness, reliability, and space efficiency within a jukebox-style HDD, while minimizing overall cost of the HDD. In an effort to reduce the movement of a robotic arm assembly, cassettes within a jukebox-style HDD may be configured to be magnetically repositionable to replace some of the movement of the robotic arm assembly, without adding another significant source of potential mechanical failure within the HDD enclosure. Further, the overall number of moving parts is reduced, which may improve reliability of the HDD, as well as cleanliness within the HDD enclosure.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR RAPID REPLACEMENT OF ROBOTIC MEDIA MOVER IN AUTOMATED MEDIA LIBRARY
20220130429 · 2022-04-28 ·

A mover replacement system for removing a media mover, movable between an operating position and a removable position, from within a media library includes a module housing and a service tray. The module housing forms at least a part of a library housing. The service tray is removably positionable within the module housing. The service tray is configured to releasably retain the media mover when the media mover is in the removable position so that the service tray and the media mover are movable as an integral unit out of and into the module housing. The service tray includes a tray body and at least one locking mechanism that is movable relative to the tray body between a retracted position when the at least one locking mechanism is positioned not to engage the media mover, and a fully extended position when the at least one locking mechanism is positioned to retain the media mover relative to the tray body.

A mover replacement system for removing a media mover, movable between an operating position and a removable position, from within a media library includes a service tray and a capture assembly. The service tray is removably positionable within the library housing. The service tray includes a tray body. The capture assembly is configured to enable the service tray to securely receive and releasably retain the media mover when the media mover is in the removable position. The capture assembly includes at least one locking mechanism that is movable relative to the tray body between a retracted position when the at least one locking mechanism is positioned not to engage the media mover, and a fully extended position when the at least one locking mechanism is positioned to retain the media mover relative to the tray body when the media mover is in the removable position.

Read-write device for an archival data storage library
11810600 · 2023-11-07 · ·

A magnetic read-write device includes a disk spindle on which disk media are rotatably mounted, an enclosure in which the spindle is housed, an opening/closing mechanism such as a cover configured for opening to provide access to the spindle and for closing to contain particles that may be generated during operation of the device, and a seal configured for sealing the enclosure when the opening/closing mechanism is closed. The device may further include a pre-loaded hinge coupling the cover with the enclosure, and a loading mechanism such as a spring coupled with the hinge and configured for biasing the cover to a closed position and for applying a sealing force to the seal at an interface of the cover and the enclosure. This type of device may be implemented for use in an archival data storage system library such as in a cleanroom storage system.

RAIL-BASED MEDIA TRANSPORT ROBOT FOR DISK CARTRIDGE DATA STORAGE LIBRARY
20230238028 · 2023-07-27 ·

A data storage disk cartridge library system includes a rack having an array of bays, at least some housing disk media cartridges and/or media drives, and a pair of horizontal and vertical guide rails bordering each bay. A media transport robot includes fixed-position drive wheels at each corner for driving the robot along the guide rails, and pivoting guide wheels corresponding to each drive wheel for guiding the drive wheel horizontally along a horizontal guide rail and vertically along a vertical guide rail. With each guide wheel coupled with a horizontal guide rail the robot can travel horizontally on the rack, and with each guide wheel coupled with a vertical guide rail the robot can travel vertically on the rack. Electrical power can be supplied to the robot via the guide rails, and gear portions of the wheels mechanically interface with a mechanical portion of the guide rails.

Hard disc drive with internal access door

An issue facing shared read/write player hard disc drives (HDDs) is when a head-media contact event occurs, any resulting plume of debris caused by the contact event not only affects the magnetic disc currently being read or written, but other magnetic discs within the HDD enclosure. The presently disclosed technology is directed as mitigating the potential consequences of such a head-media contact event. By providing one or more internal access doors within the HDD, a magnetic disc currently being read from or written to may be physically isolated from other magnetic discs within the HDD. As a result, in the event of a head-media contact event, any resulting plume of debris caused by the contact event only affects the magnetic disc currently being read or written. The remaining magnetic discs within the HDD are isolated from the plume of debris.
