A method of performing communication between a first device and a second device by using a Wi-Fi direct scheme is provided. The method may include receiving, by the first device, information on relating to a content protection capability of the second device in during a device discovery procedure; and determining, by the first device, whether to perform a connection setup procedure with the second device based on the received information on relating to the content protection capability of the second device.

A playback method according to one aspect of the present disclosure is performed by a Blu-ray device connected to a display device. The playback method includes obtaining, from a recording medium, output control information of content recorded on the recording medium; obtaining, from the recording medium, a video signal of the content recorded on the recording medium; and (a) outputting the obtained video signal to the display device without converting image quality of the video signal, when the obtained output control information does not restrict output of content using a first copyright protection technology, and (b) converting the image quality of the obtained video signal and outputting the video signal to the display device, when the obtained output control information restricts output of content using the first copyright protection technology and output using the first copyright protection technology is performed according to a type of the display device.

A data protection method includes identifying data indicative of a software element parameter of a software element to be protected, which may be a hash of the software element image or carrier media image area. The method includes identifying data indicative of a medium parameter of a medium authorized to carry the software element, which may be a unique identifier embedded in a non-image area of the medium. A validation token is defined based on a predefined protocol and written to a non-image area of the medium, which token is a function of the software element parameter and medium parameter. A device for executing the software element uses the same predefined protocol to verify the token prior to allowing execution of the software element. If the software element is copied to another medium, the validation token is not verifiable for the copied software, thereby restricting execution of the copied software element.

The content includes an individual segment region formed of a plurality of variation data in which identification information different from each other is embedded and each of which can be decrypted by a different key, and a common segment region formed of single data. The variation data is formed of a 6144 byte aligned unit. The data processing unit calculates a reproduction path by applying a device key held in a memory, and selects an aligned unit corresponding to one variation data that corresponds to the calculated reproduction path from a plurality of aligned units configuring the plurality of variation data in the individual segment region included in the data read from the information recording medium, and then, executes the decryption and reproduction processing.
