Data Read Synchronization from Phase Modulated Synchronization Fields in a Data Storage Device

Example channel circuits, data storage devices, and methods for data read synchronization from phase modulated synchronization fields are described. A data synchronization detector may receive an oversampled digital read signal read from a synchronization field that uses a single written pattern to encode the start of data position, phase, and gain for the read channel. The write pattern may use a phase modulated carrier signal to encode a pseudo-random binary sequence indicating the start of data position.

Recalling data from tape

A system for recalling data from tape is disclosed. The system includes computer processing circuits and computer readable storage media having computer executable instructions. When executed, the instructions cause the computer-processing circuits to start, in response to a request to recall data from a tape, to read the tape at a read position. Additionally, the instructions cause the circuits to determine that the tape comprises a damaged region. Further, the instructions cause the circuits to determine a start position of the damaged region by skimming the tape. Additionally, the instructions cause the circuits to determine an end position of the damaged region by skimming the tape. Further, the instructions cause the circuits to read between the read position and the start position of the damaged region. Additionally, the instructions cause the circuits to read between the end position of the damaged region and an end of data indicator.

Codeword interleaving over magnetic media surfaces
12198724 · 2025-01-14 · ·

The present disclosure describes aspects of codeword interleaving over magnetic media surfaces. In some aspects, segments of a codeword are spread or interleaved across multiple surfaces of magnetic storage media. Data for one or more codewords may be received by a read/write channel and, for each codeword, a respective index is selected, received, or generated. The index may indicate which sector partitions of the multiple surfaces that segments of one of the codewords are to be written. The data of the codewords can be segmented and then arranged in an interleaver based on the respective index to which the codeword corresponds. The codeword segments are written from the interleaver to sectors of the multiple surfaces of the magnetic media. By so doing, codewords may be spread across multiple surfaces, such that a loss of a portion of a segment track does not prevent readback and decoding of the codewords.

Shingled magnetic recording hard disk drive media cache copy transfer

A shingled magnetic recording (SMR) hard disk drive (HDD) receives a read command for data associated with a range of logical block addresses (LBAs). In situations where a first portion of valid data associated with the range of LBAs is stored in an SMR region of the HDD and a second portion of valid data associated with the range of LBAs is stored in a non-SMR region of the HDD, the first portion is read from the SMR region in a single disk access and copied to a first buffer of the HDD, and the second portion is read from the non-SMR region in one or more disk accesses and copied to a second buffer of the HDD. The valid data associated with the range of LBAs stored in the second buffer are copied to the first buffer to be combined with valid data associated with the range of LBAs stored in the first buffer, and the combined valid data is then transferred to the host to complete execution of the read command.

Write data management

Provided are a computer program product, device, system, and method for write data management. In one embodiment, a write management controller calculates an order for writing data and parity blocks of write data code words on tape media in a variable interleaved fashion which ensures a minimum physical longitudinal separation along the length of tape between data and parity blocks of the same code word. The calculated write order information may be provided back to a host or other data source so that the write data is eventually transmitted to the tape drive for writing on tape media in accordance with the calculated write order. In this manner, a minimum physical longitudinal separation along the length of tape between data and parity blocks of the same code word may be achieved to increase the reliability of the data storage.

Magnetic disk device

According to the embodiment, an HDC receives a plurality of data segments from a host, and executes generation and addition of a first code and output of a data segment to which the first code is added to each data segment. An HDC calculates exclusive OR with respect to the first codes, and outputs obtained first information. The RWC performs data conversion and calculation of exclusive OR on the plurality of data segments to which the first code is added, and outputs the plurality of data segments after the data conversion and a track parity obtained by the calculation of the exclusive OR. The RWC acquires the first code from the plurality of data segments. The RWC calculates exclusive OR with respect to a group of the second codes which are the acquired first codes to acquire second information. The RWC compares the first information with the second information.

The present technology relates to a recording control apparatus, a recording control method, a drive controlling controller, a drive controlling method, a recording medium, and a program capable of reading information more reliably. A manager generates DMSs as management information for managing user data areas and spare areas of an optical disc. Further, the manager records the generated DMS in a DMA area of DS0 of the optical disc, and, in addition, records the generated DMS in a DMA mirror area of the DS1 surface of the optical disc. As described above, since DMSs as management information are recorded in the different areas of the optical disc, even if DMS cannot be read from one area, DMS can be read from the other area. The present technology is applicable to a recording and reproducing apparatus.
