Magnetic tape device, magnetic recording device, and tape lifting method for magnetic tape device
11393504 · 2022-07-19 · ·

A magnetic tape device includes: a magnetic head; a head actuator that holds the magnetic head; and a tape lifting mechanism including a lifter arm. The lifter arm comes into contact with the magnetic tape to separate a magnetic tape from the magnetic head. The tape lifting mechanism moves the lifter arm in a push-out direction in conjunction with the head actuator moving in a first direction. The tape lifting mechanism moves the lifter arm in a retreating direction in conjunction with the head actuator moving in a second direction. The lifter arm pushes out the magnetic tape to separate the magnetic tape from the magnetic head, in response to the lifter arm moving in the push-out direction. The lifter arm separates from the magnetic tape to bring the magnetic tape into contact with the magnetic head, in response to the lifter arm moving in the retreating direction.

SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY BASED ACTUATOR LATCH

A device disclosed herein includes an upper shape memory alloy (SMA) wire, a lower SMA wire, a flexure having an opening, and a spring configured within the flexure opening, wherein the lower SMA wire, and the flexure are attached at one end to an anchor and at another end to a pin.

ROTATING RAMP WITH RETRACTION CAPABILITY FOR A DISK DRIVE

A data storage system include a disk drive having a rotating ramp assembly that may be moved between an engaged and disengaged position. The rotating ramp assembly may include a ramp extension that is not disposed in overlapping relation to a data storage disk location in the drive when in the disengaged position. However, in the engaged position, the ramp extension may overhang a portion of the data storage disk location. In turn, the head extension may include a ramp surface that allows a head assembly to move to a head parking surface when the rotating ramp assembly is in the engaged position. IN turn, the rotating ramp assembly may be rotated while maintaining the head assembly on the head parking surface, which may be arcuate and extend about at least a portion of the rotating ramp assembly.

Retractable ramp for data storage devices

A data storage device includes a ramp that supports at least one head, and a retraction mechanism that moves the ramp from a non-retracted position to a retracted position. The movement of the ramp is enabled by at least one of expansion or contraction of at least a portion of the retraction mechanism. The data storage device further includes a ramp retraction control module operably coupled to the retraction mechanism. The ramp retraction control module provides the retraction mechanism with a first control signal that causes the retraction mechanism to move the ramp from the non-retracted position to the retracted position.

ACTUATORS FOR AN ELEVATOR DRIVE

A data storage device includes a base, a shaft that extends perpendicular from the base, and a head stack assembly (HSA) having a first end to which a head is coupled and a second end that is movably mounted on the shaft. The data storage device also includes either a first actuator assembly or a second actuator assembly. The first actuator assembly includes a first coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second coil-permanent magnet assembly that serves as a first elevator to linearly move the HSA along the shaft. The second actuator assembly includes a third coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second elevator that linearly moves the HSA along the shaft and also moves a data storage device ramp in unison with the HSA.
