The present technology provides a magnetic recording medium including a magnetic layer containing magnetic powders, in which, the magnetic layer contains first particles having conductivity and second particles of which Mohs hardness is 7 or more, protrusions are formed on a surface of the magnetic layer side in accordance with the first particles and the second particles, a ratio (H.sub.1/H.sub.2) of an average height (H.sub.1) of protrusions formed in accordance with the first particles to an average height (H.sub.2) of protrusions formed in accordance with the second particles is 2.3 or less, and the average height (H.sub.2) of the protrusions formed in accordance with the second particles is 7 nm or less.

The outer peripheral surface of the reel hub has a first outer peripheral region and a second outer peripheral region. The first outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first end portion toward the second end portion. The second outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first outer peripheral region across the second end portion and forms a ridge line portion having a shape projecting radially outward of the hub portion on a boundary between the second outer peripheral region and the first outer peripheral region.

A tape reel according to an embodiment of the present technology includes: a first flange; a second flange; and a reel hub having a cylindrical shape. The outer peripheral surface of the reel hub has a first outer peripheral region and a second outer peripheral region. The first outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first end portion toward the second end portion. The second outer peripheral region expands in diameter from the first outer peripheral region across the second end portion and forms a ridge line portion having a shape projecting radially outward of the hub portion on a boundary between the second outer peripheral region and the first outer peripheral region.

Mechanized take-up reel and method for loading and unloading a tape storage medium

Various embodiments relate to methods for loading and unloading a tape storage medium. According to one embodiment, a method for loading a tape storage medium includes positioning a mechanized take-up reel with respect to a tape supply reel, positioning a feature coupled to a tape storage medium on the tape supply reel with respect to the mechanized take-up reel, rotatably decoupling an inner hub of the mechanized take-up reel from an outer hub of the mechanized take-up reel, extending a tongue of the mechanized take-up reel, engaging the tongue with the feature, retracting the tongue and feature into the outer hub, and nonrotably coupling the inner hub with the outer hub.
