The alignment mark is formed in the substrate outside the cell area of the substrate. After formation of the source lines, cell stacking layers are formed. After forming the cell stacking layers, cell pillars in the cell stacking layers are formed at locations relative to the previously formed source lines using the alignment mark to correctly locate the cell pillars.

An array of vertical NAND columns is in a second area of the plurality of word line layers. Each vertical NAND column in the array of vertical NAND columns includes a memory pillar. Each vertical NAND column comprises a second plurality of memory cells arranged in a NAND configuration formed at cross points of word line layers in the plurality of word line layers with the memory pillar.

A storage system has a memory with memory cells that can store a non-power-of-two number of states. A map is used to distribute data bits in the memory. The map can be a modified version of a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) map. The mapping can be done by a controller in the storage system or by the memory die. Performing the mapping in the memory die can reduce data traffic between the controller and the memory die, which can provide an improvement to performance and power consumption.
