In some aspects, an air purification system for a vacuum cleaner comprises an ultraviolet (UV) light unit disposed in a first location within the vacuum cleaner along an airflow pathway, configured to emit UV light at air containing particles including dust, dirt, and microbes while the air containing the particles is flowing in the airflow pathway where the UV light unit is disposed; and a particle filter unit disposed in a second location within the vacuum cleaner along the airflow pathway, the particle filter unit comprising one or both of a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter and an active carbon filter.

A hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclonic stage comprising an openable front wall provided at the front end of the cyclonic stage. A pre-motor filter is positioned in the air flow passage downstream from the cyclone air outlet and rearward of the cyclone sidewall. The pre-motor filter has a diameter in a direction transverse to the cyclone axis that is larger than a diameter of the cyclone air outlet in the direction transverse to the cyclone axis. The pre-motor filter has an outer perimeter defining a volume and the cyclone axis and the motor axis each extend through a centre of the volume. The cyclone axis is generally parallel to the motor axis. When the openable front wall is opened, the front end of the cyclone stage is opened and has an opening, the opening has a diameter in the direction transverse to the cyclone axis, and the rear end of the cyclonic stage has a diameter that is generally equal to the diameter of the opening. The cyclonic stage is removable from a cleaner body which houses the suction motor with the openable front wall in a closed position. When the first cyclonic stage is removed, the pre-motor filter is accessible for removal.

The bagging portion includes a hood having an arcuate portion, a bag removably positioned below the hood and having an inner face, and a bagging passage for directing the air and debris from the input portion to the hood. The arcuate portion extends from the bagging passage to the bag such that the air and debris from the bagging passage travels along the arcuate portion and thereafter apply a dislodging force to dislodge debris collected at the inner face of the bag.

The collection bin includes an opening adjacent a bottom portion of the collection bin and a lid moveably coupled to the collection bin to selectively cover the opening in a closed position and uncover the opening in an open position. The lid is movable to the open position to empty the contents of the collection bin through the opening while the collection bin remains attached to the housing.
