A hand-held measurement device for appearance analyses includes a measurement array which comprises a number of illumination means for applying illumination light to a measurement field in at least three illumination directions and a number of pick-up means for capturing the measurement light in at least one observation direction. The illumination directions and the observation directions lie in a common system plane. At least one pick-up means is embodied to spectrally gauge the measurement light in a locally integral way, and at least one imaging pick-up means is embodied to gauge the measurement light in terms of color in a locally resolved way. The spectral pick-up means and the locally resolving pick-up means are arranged such that they receive the measurement light reflected by the measurement field under the same observation conditions and in particular from the same observation direction.

Disclosed is a process for determining a plurality of color quality indicators for controlling the color of a coating. Colorimetric coordinates of a color reference and the coating are ascertained for a plurality of coated surface elements using a spectrophotometer at a number of measurement geometries and a number of light sources. For each measurement geometry and each light source, color differences are calculated from the colorimetric coordinates of the color reference and the coating of the plurality of coated surface elements. The respective colorimetric coordinates are normalized with one weighting factor. Each of the plurality of color quality indicators is determined by means of a mapping, of functional values onto a scale value of a predetermined scale. The functional values are determined in each case for the number of measurement geometries and the number of light sources by means of a mathematical relationship.

Systems and methods for determining illumination angle and viewing angle in color observation are described. The system includes an optical capturing device to acquire an image of its surroundings and a processing unit. When operated, the processing unit executes the following steps: identify a position of a light source in the image acquired by the optical capturing device; identify a position of a viewer in the image acquired by the optical capturing device; determine a first angular position of the light source with respect to the optical capturing device and a second angular position of the viewer with respect to the optical capturing device and provide the first angular position and the second angular position to define an actual viewing geometry.

Devices and methods for measuring color of a target coating are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a color measurement device includes a housing configured for placement on a target coating. A source connected to the housing directs a beam of electromagnetic radiation towards the target coating at an entrance angle. A spherical coordinate system is used, where the entrance angle is a polar angle measured from a zenith that is normal to the target coating surface. First and second detectors are connected to the housing at a first and second polar angle, respectively, to measure the electromagnetic radiation reflected by a target population of flakes within the target coating, where all the flakes in the target population of flakes have the same angled flake normal polar angle. The first polar angle is different than the second polar angle.
