Bragg Grated Fiber Optic Fluctuation Sensing and Monitoring System
A system, apparatus and method directed to detecting damage to an optical fiber. The optical fiber includes core fibers including a plurality of sensors configured to (i) reflect a light signal based on received incident light, and (ii) change a characteristic of the reflected light signal based on experienced strain. The system can include a console having memory storing logic that, when executed, causes operations of providing receiving reflected light signals of different spectral widths of the broadband incident light by one or more of the plurality of sensors, processing the reflected light signals to detect fluctuations of a portion of the optical fiber, and determining a location of the portion of the optical fiber or a defect affecting a vessel in which the portion is disposed based on the detected fluctuations. The portion may be a distal tip of the optical fiber.
ATMOSPHERIC SUIT WITH INTEGRATED FIBER OPTIC SENSING NETWORK
An atmospheric suit includes a torso portion with one or more layers, and fibers of a first material arranged in each of the one or more layers. Optical fibers are interspersed with the fibers of the first material in each of the one or more layers.
Environmental condition sensing system
Fibre optics for distributed environmental condition and/or air quality sensing such as, but not limited to, sensing air quality in enclosed areas of an aircraft such as the passenger cabin. Fibre optics can be used for sensing and for communication and are therefore well suited to the distributed sensing of environmental conditions such as temperature, relative humidity, gas and particulate composition within spaces of the aircraft e.g. the cabin, cargo space, cockpit, electronics bay etc. and in related systems such as the environmental control system (ECS), the cabin recirculation system, bleed air system etc.
OPTICAL FIBER-BASED SENSING MEMBRANE
According to examples, an optical fiber-based sensing membrane may include at least one optical fiber, and a substrate. The at least one optical fiber may be integrated in the substrate. The substrate may include a thickness and a material property that are specified to ascertain, via the at least one optical fiber and for a device that is contiguously engaged with a surface of the substrate, includes the substrate embedded in the device, or includes the surface of the substrate at a predetermined distance from the device, a thermal and/or a mechanical property associated with the device, or a radiation level associated with a device environment.
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR DETECTING AND MEASURING A BRAKING FORCE OF A BRAKING SYSTEM FOR VEHICLE, BY MEANS OF PHOTONIC SENSORS INCORPORATED IN A BRAKE PAD
A method for detecting and measuring a clamping force and/or a braking torque includes encapsulating a fiber-optic strain sensor in a casing and incorporating the casing in a portion of friction material adhering to a base platform of a brake pad, detecting, by the fiber-optic strain sensor, a first strain in a first position of the casing along a first direction and a second strain in a second position of the friction material along a second direction, generating a first photonic signal, representative of the first detected strain, and a second photonic signal, representative of the second detected strain, receiving the first and second photonic signals, by an optical reading/ interrogation unit, optically connected to the fiber-optic strain sensor, determining, by the optical reading/ interrogation unit, the values of the first and second strains based on the first and second received photonic signals and determining a measurement of the clamping force and/or braking torque based on determined values of the first and second strains.
Guidewire With Fiber Bragg Grating Strain Sensors
A guidewire including an optical fiber containing three fiber cores, each supporting a strain-sensing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is described. The three FBGs are susceptible to changes in strain so that axial and lateral force vectors imparted to the FBGs can be ascertained. An optical connector detachably connects the guidewire optic fiber to a proximal optical fiber. The proximal optical fiber in turn is connected to a controller, which in addition to ascertaining the axial and lateral force vectors imparted to each of the FBGs, is programmed to calculate the spatial orientation of the guidewire as it is advanced through the vasculature. This capability is extremely useful for positioning the guidewire at a body site of interest prior to performing a medical procedure. A temperature-sensing FBG is used to compensate for changes in the ambient temperature.
Evaluating method and evaluation system
This evaluating method is an evaluating method for evaluating an assembly (50) provided with a reinforced member (60) and a reinforcing member (70), and includes: a step of introducing incident light into a first optical fiber (20) extending between a first composite layer and a second composite layer and detecting outgoing light therefrom to measure a first strain distribution, and introducing incident light into a second optical fiber (30) extending between the second composite layer and a third composite layer and detecting outgoing light therefore to measure a second strain distribution; and a step of acquiring the shape of wrinkles at the surface (60s) of the reinforced member (60) from the first strain distribution and the second strain distribution.
Optic fibres and fibre optic sensing
Fiber optic cables with improved performance for use in distributed sensing, for instance in distributed acoustic sensors, are disclosed. In one embodiment a fiber optic cable (210) comprises a core (208) and cladding (206) disposed within a buffer material (202) surrounded by a jacket (204) and arranged so that the core is offset from the center of the cable. By offsetting the core from the center of the jacket any bending effects on the core can be maximized compared to the core being located at the center of the cable.
DISTRIBUTED OPTICAL FIBER SENSING USING POINT SENSORS
Aspects of the present disclosure describe distributed optical fiber sensing systems, methods, and structures that advantageously employ point sensors that send sensory data/information over an attached, distributed optical fiber sensor without using a separate network or communications facility.
Polarization control with low polarization-mode dispersion
Optical polarization control devices that include two pairs of squeezing plates oriented in mutually perpendicular directions are described. Compressive forces exerted by the two pairs of plates onto an optical fiber can be configured for low polarization mode dispersion. Various methods and systems in which the polarization control devices can be employed are also described.
