Provided are a microparticle sorting device, and a method and a program for sorting microparticles capable of stabilizing sorting performance over a prolonged period of time. The microparticle sorting device includes an imaging element and a controller. The imaging element obtains an image of fluid and fluid droplets at a position where the fluid discharged from an orifice which generates a fluid stream is converted into the fluid droplets. The controller controls driving voltage of an oscillation element which gives oscillation to the orifice and/or controls a position of the imaging element based on a state of the fluid in the image and/or a state of a satellite fluid droplet. The satellite fluid droplet does not include microparticles and exists between the position, where the fluid is converted into the fluid droplets, and a fluid droplet, among fluid droplets including the microparticles, which is closest to the position where the fluid is converted into the fluid droplets.

DYNAMIC RANGE EXTENSION SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PARTICLE ANALYSIS IN BLOOD SAMPLES

For analyzing a sample containing particles of at least two categories, such as a sample containing blood cells, a particle counter subject to a detection limit is coupled with an analyzer capable of discerning particle number ratios, such as a visual analyzer, and a processor. A first category of particles can be present beyond detection range limits while a second category of particles is present within respective detection range limits. The concentration of the second category of particles is determined by the particle counter. A ratio of counts of the first category to the second category is determined on the analyzer. The concentration of particles in the first category is calculated on the processor based on the ratio and the count or concentration of particles in the second category.

NON-POISSONIAN DROPLET PARTITIONING USING FEEDBACK

A method of partitioning droplets from a fluid reservoir containing particles provides a non-Poissonian distribution of dispensed droplets containing a desired number of particles. The method constitutes a method of operating an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) device including the steps of: inputting a fluid reservoir containing particles into the EWOD device; performing an electrowetting operation to dispense a plurality of dispensed droplets from the fluid reservoir; interrogating each droplet with a detector and determining whether each dispensed droplet has a desired number of particles; selecting dispensed droplets that contain the desired number of particles and performing an electrowetting operation to move the selected dispensed droplets to a reaction area on the EWOD device; and rejecting dispensed droplets that do not contain the desired number of particles and performing an electrowetting operation to move the rejected dispensed droplets to a holding area on the EWOD device that is different and spaced apart from the reaction area. The selected droplets may be combined, including with or without a portion of the rejected droplets and/or additional reagent, into a larger reaction droplet that may be used in subsequent reaction protocols.
