Ultrasonic phased array transducer apparatus for the nondestructive inspection of a component under test
A phased array transducer apparatus includes a plurality of Phases Array Subassemblies (PASAs) that are arranged in three pairs in a single housing. The PASAs are each oriented at a compound angle with respect to a component under test in an environment such as a nuclear environment. The phased array transducer apparatus is carried into the environment by a tool, and the positioning of the PASAs on the phased array transducer apparatus results in the outputting of ultrasonic beams in various directions that avoids the need for the housing to be reoriented on the tool in order to complete an inspection of the object under test.
METHOD FOR PRIORITIZING DATA PROCESSING OF A PLURALITY OF ULTRASONIC SCAN DATA FILES
A method is disclosed provide a method of collecting a group of scan data files and organizing those files for batch data processing to produce a weld indications table for each scan data file in a prioritized manner. The invention also provides a procedure for controlling the pre-processing of each file by extracting meta-data held in an ultrasonic data file and from such data determine whether the testing data is valid for review. A series of rules may be used by a selection engine to control a batch list of files for data processing and for review after data processing so that time by a weld inspector may be optimized for each construction project.
METHOD FOR CHECKING FOR CONSISTENCY AND QUALITY COMPLIANCE IN AN ULTRASONIC SCANNING DATA FILE
A method is disclosed to extract meta-data held in a weld scan data file and from such data determine whether the testing data is acceptable for review. A series of configuration parameters held in the scan data file are analyzed for inconsistencies and a select set of parameters are reviewed for codes and industry accepted standards compliance with recorded scan data. Additional qualitative tests may be implemented on the scan test file and unacceptable results may also provide guidance to the weld inspector as to whether continued review of the scan data file is worthwhile. Such consistency testing avoids wasteful activities reviewing a flawed weld scan data file and provides signals to operators to avoid the processing of such a file by weld scan analysis software when such processing will not result in successful assistance to a weld inspector.
Method For Automatically Inspecting A Weld Bead Deposited In a Chamfer Formed Between Two Metal Pieces To Be Assembled
A method of automatically inspecting a weld bead deposited in a plurality of passes in a chamfer formed between two parts by performing the following steps: positioning at least one emission electromagnetic acoustic sensor on one side of the chamfer and at least one reception electromagnetic acoustic sensor an opposite side of the chamfer, the ultrasound wave emission sensor being configured to emit Rayleigh surface waves; while depositing a pass, automatically moving the sensors to follow the movement of welding electrodes along the chamfer; activating the sensors while they are moving to enable the emission sensor to generate and emit Rayleigh waves towards the pass of the weld bead that is being deposited, the reception sensor receiving the ultrasound signals transmitted and/or reflected in said pass; and reiterating the operation for the entire pass of the weld bead.
ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTION DEVICE, ULTRASONIC FLAW DETECTION METHOD, METHOD OF MANUFACTURING WELDED STEEL PIPE, AND WELDED STEEL PIPE QUALITY CONTROL METHOD
An ultrasonic flaw detection device includes: a matrix array probe; an ultrasonic wave transmitting and receiving unit that controls the matrix array probe; and an evaluation unit that detects a planar defect based on the reflected ultrasonic waves received by the ultrasonic wave transmitting and receiving unit. The matrix array probe has a plurality of vibration elements arranged lattice-like, an array pitch of the vibration elements in the pipe axis direction is larger than a wavelength of ultrasonic waves transmitted and received, widths of the vibration elements in the pipe axis direction decrease outward in the pipe axis direction from a pipe axis direction center position of the matrix array probe, and the widths and center coordinates of the vibration elements in the pipe axis direction have been adjusted such that all of ultrasonic waves from the vibration elements overlap in a focal position control range for the ultrasonic waves.
Reusable buoyancy modules for buoyancy control of underwater vehicles
A water environment robotic system and method has a buoyancy configuration which can be selectively altered. The system includes an underwater robotic vehicle and a buoyancy module that is configured to be repeatedly, selectively buoyantly engaged and buoyantly disengaged with the underwater robotic vehicle. A tether is connected to the buoyancy module and a motor is operatively connected to the tether and is configured to extend and retract the tether and buoyancy module. The tether can be extended and retracted to extend and retract the buoyancy module. Extending and retracting the buoyancy module can buoyantly engage or buoyantly disengage the buoyancy module with the underwater robotic vehicle according to the arrangement of the system. By engaging and disengaging the buoyancy module, the buoyancy of the underwater robot can be selectively altered.
ULTRASONIC WELD ANALYSIS FOR ORTHOTROPIC STEEL DECKING SYSTEMS IN BRIDGES
A system provides for the calculation of the penetration depth of a weld in an orthotropic steel decking system. Weld scan section data is accessed and each scan section along the weld seam is processed to find the amount of penetration as a percentage of the thickness of the rib leg metal at the weld location. The amount of penetration is calculated by finding ultrasonic reflections recorded as voxels that have the greatest magnitude within an area of contiguous magnitudes and then determining the location of those voxels relative to the weld geometry and distance along the thickness of the rib leg steel. A report for each section scan and the entire weld seam may be generated for review by a weld inspector that allows for spot inspections of specified areas along the weld seam for possible weld remediation.
Method for manufacturing outer joint member of constant velocity universal joint and ultrasonic flaw detection-inspection method for a welded portion
A manufacturing method is used for an outer joint member of a constant velocity universal joint. The outer joint member includes a cup section having track grooves formed in its inner periphery, which are engageable with torque transmitting elements, and a shaft section formed at a bottom portion of the cup section. The manufacturing method includes welding the cup and shaft members by irradiating a beam to joining end portions of the cup and shaft members, causing an outer surface including the welded portion to be formed into a flat smooth surface by removal processing, irradiating ultrasonic waves to the flat smooth surface with one probe at an incident angle which prevents total reflection in a circumferential angle beam flaw detection method, and setting a focal point of the ultrasonic waves to positions from a surface to an inside of the welded portion, to thereby perform inspection.
