Clustered volley method and apparatus

Systems and methods are disclosed for assessing the function of parts of one or more sensory fields of a subject. Pupillary responses to at least two clustered ensembles of stimuli presented to predetermined portions of the sensory fields to be tested are measured. Each cluster comprises individual stimuli presented at locations across the sensory field, where the locations are defined on appropriate axes for the tested sensory fields. The method comprises: presenting statistically independent sequences of selected individual stimuli from the two or more clustered stimulus ensembles to a sensory field of a subject, thereby evoking pupillary responses in at least one pupil of the subject; detecting responses of the pupil or pupils evoked by the stimuli using at least one sensor; and processing the detected responses to relate the detected response to the sensory function of each component part of the sensory field. The sensory fields may be, but are not limited to, the visual fields of the two eyes of a subject.

Disclosed is an eye examination apparatus for use with a smartphone or other portable electronic device. The eye examination apparatus has a body having a first eye opening and a second eye opening for a user to see into the eye examination apparatus using two eyes. In accordance with an embodiment of the disclosure, the eye examination apparatus has a coupling for receiving a smartphone having a display and a camera and for holding the smartphone in a predefined position in relation to the body, such that the camera of the smartphone is positioned to acquire ophthalmic images through the first eye opening, and the display of the smartphone is viewable through the second eye opening. In this manner, it is possible for the user to have an eye examination performed remotely outside of a clinician's office without specialized equipment by instead using their own smartphone.

Target presenting apparatus

A target presenting apparatus includes: a display for emitting a target light flux; a concave mirror for receiving the target light flux in such a manner as to displace the target light flux from an optical axis thereof; a housing for accommodating the concave mirror and the display therein; and an optical member, placed in the housing, for guiding the target light flux from the inside to the outside of the housing to present a target to an examinee.

The present invention generally relates to apparatus, software and methods for assessing ocular, ophthalmic, neurological, physiological, psychological and/or behavioral conditions. As disclosed herein, the conditions are assessed using eye-tracking technology that beneficially eliminates the need for a subject to fixate and maintain focus during testing or to produce a secondary (non-optical) physical movement or audible response, i.e., feedback. The subject is only required to look at a series of individual visual stimuli, which is generally an involuntary reaction. The reduced need for cognitive and/or physical involvement of a subject allows the present modalities to achieve greater accuracy, due to reduced human error, and to be used with a wide variety of subjects, including small children, patients with physical disabilities or injuries, patients with diminished mental capacity, elderly patients, animals, etc.
