Turbine speed detection and use

A speed control system and a power load balance detector for a turbine is provided. The speed control system includes a speed wheel with a plurality of teeth. A timer stores a time stamp when each of the teeth passes by a speed probe. A first speed estimate is determined for overspeed protection, and a second speed estimate is determined for operational speed control. The power load balance detector trips or shuts down the turbine when an unbalance is above a first threshold and the speed of the turbine is above a second threshold.

A device and a method for monitoring and analysis utilize unintended electromagnetic emissions of electrically powered components, devices or systems. The emissions are received at the antenna and a receiver. A processor processes and measures change or changes in a signature of the unintended electromagnetic emissions. The measurement are analyzed to both record a baseline score for future measurements and to be used in determining status and/or health of the analyzed system or component.

The control unit being further configured to determine a characteristic of the decoupling device based on the characteristic of the capacitive sensor and to provide an estimated capacitance based on the characteristic of the decoupling device, the estimated capacitance being indicative of the state of the capacitive sensor.

Sensor fault detection system and method

Fault detection techniques for control of sensor systems. A sensor control integrated circuit (“IC”) may include a fault detection system for coupling to the sensor supply lines. The system may detect faults for each of the sensor supply lines. The fault detection system may level shift sensor supply line signals from a first voltage domain to a second voltage domain appropriate for the fault detection system of the controller IC. The fault detection system may level shift source potential voltages from the first voltage domain to the second voltage domain to detect predetermined fault types. The fault detection system may compare the second domain voltages from the sensor supply lines to voltages representing predetermined fault types and may generate fault status indicators based on the comparison.

Wire break detection in digital input receivers

An optocoupler is placed in series between the field ground pin of digital input circuitry and the field ground of an industrial controller. A capacitor to field ground is provided for each digital input. A resistor is provided to the input pin of the digital input circuitry. To detect a broken wire a test pulse is provided to the optocoupler connected in the ground path. This test pulse isolates the digital input circuitry from field ground. As current is always being provided from the field when the wire is not broken, the capacitor connected between the input and ground charges. After the test pulse has completed, the output signal of the digital input circuitry is examined. If the level indicates the input is high, the wire is not broken. If, however, the output remains low indicating that the input is low, the wire has broken.

Method for diagnosing an electrical circuit

A method for diagnosing an electrical circuit including at least one electrical device, an actuator for the device controlled by a high side actuating switch and a low side actuating switch, and at least one additional switch not in series with any of the HS or LS switch, the method including: to each of the possible statuses of the circuit, giving a code; sequentially putting the circuit in at least some of these statuses for a given time period; during each of these periods, measuring voltage and/or current in different parts of the circuit and giving a code to the measurement; and establishing a diagnosis of correct functioning or of a malfunctioning of at least some elements of the circuit according to a pre-established correlation between the status codes and the measurement codes.
