AUDIO SOURCE LOCALIZATION
20220060820 · 2022-02-24 ·

An electronic device localizes an audio source by normalizing an amplitude of an audio signal over a time period. The electronic device receives, from one or more microphones of the electronic device, signal(s) representative of audio emitted by an audio source over a time period. The electronic device estimates amplitudes of the signal(s) at a first time within the time period and at a second time within the time period, where the second time is different from the first time. The electronic device normalizes the amplitudes associated with the first and second times to generate normalized amplitudes. The electronic device determines a combined amplitude representative of the audio emitted by the audio source by combining the normalized amplitudes. The electronic device determines, based at least in part on the combined amplitude and motion of the electronic device, an estimated position of the audio source relative to the electronic device.

The processor is also configured to determine at least one reverberation characteristic of the audio signal. The processor is further configured to determine a distance, relative to the microphone array, of the sound source along an axis associated with the angular location based on the at least one reverberation characteristic.

Synthesizing audio corresponding to a virtual microphone location

Disclosed is a system and method for generating a model of the geometric relationships between various audio sources recorded by a multi-camera system. The spatial audio scene module associates source signals, extracted from recorded audio, of audio sources to visual objects identified in videos recorded by one or more cameras. This association may be based on estimated positions of the audio sources based on relative signal gains and delays of the source signal received at each microphone. The estimated positions of audio sources are tracked indirectly by tracking the associated visual objects with computer vision. A virtual microphone module may receive a position for a virtual microphone and synthesize a signal corresponding to the virtual microphone position based on the estimated positions of the audio sources.

Based on the location information of the source, the directional focus of the at least one microphone array can be adjusted, and the sound input can be captured based on the adjusted directional focus.

Method and apparatus for estimating talker distance

An audio capture device generates two microphone beam patterns with different directivity indices. The audio capture device may determine the position of a user relative to the audio capture device based on sounds detected by the separate microphone beam patterns. Accordingly, the audio capture device allows the determination of the position of the user without the complexity and cost of using a dedicated listening device and/or a camera. In particular, the audio capture device does not need to be immediately proximate to the user (e.g., held near the ear of the user) and may be used to immediately provide other services to the user (e.g., audio/video playback, telephony functions, etc.). The position of the user may include the measured distance between the audio capture device and the user, the proximity of the user relative to another device/object, and/or the orientation of the user relative to the audio capture device.
