An electronic device and a method for identifying a location by the electronic device are provided. The electronic device includes a display, a processor electrically connected with the display and a memory, and the memory storing instructions executed by the processor. The processor is configured to obtain a plurality of locations in a space-of-interest, detect a wireless signal from at least one external electronic device located in the space-of-interest or an adjacent area, obtain detection frequency data according to a frequency of detection of the wireless signal, and identify a current location of the electronic device based on at least part of the obtained detection frequency data.

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture are disclosed for locating mobile devices using wireless signals in mixed mode. A disclosed method includes generating an access point signal matrix based on signal strength values based on first signal data collected at a mobile device corresponding to first signals received from a plurality of access points for a first period of time, and based on second signal data collected at the plurality of access points corresponding to second signals received from the mobile device and the plurality of access points for a second period of time, determining a first group of contour perimeters corresponding to first ones of the signal strength values in the access point signal matrix that satisfy a first threshold, the first group of contour perimeters including an obstructed contour perimeter corresponding to second ones of the signal strength values in the access point signal matrix that do not satisfy the first threshold, determining a second group of contour perimeters by replacing the obstructed contour perimeter with a corrected contour perimeter, and determining a location of the mobile device based on the second group of contour perimeters including the corrected contour perimeter.

A location estimation apparatus includes a sub area extraction section configured to extract one or more sub areas including at least a part of a region defined by a location and an error range indicated by positioning information, a precision parameter extraction section configured to refer to map information in which area identification information is associated with a precision parameter indicating a positioning precision and extract, with regard to each of the one or more sub areas extracted by the sub area extraction section, the precision parameter, and an output section configured to output the sub area where the positioning precision indicated by the precision parameter is equal to or worse than the positioning precision indicated by the positioning information, as a location of a moving object.

A mobile wireless device locating method at a mobile wireless device includes: determining, based at least in part on measurements of first signals, first location information for the mobile wireless device; sending a request for transceiver information based on the first location information; receiving the transceiver information at the mobile wireless device, the transceiver information including transceiver identifiers and corresponding locations; measuring second signals from at least some of the transceivers included in the transceiver information, at least one of the second signals being from an uncooperative terrestrial base station capable of bi-directional communications and configured to prevent data and/or voice communications with the mobile wireless device; and determining second location information for the mobile wireless device using information obtained from measuring the second signals.

A method for assisting in locating a position of a mobile wireless device includes: obtaining location information of an approximate location of the mobile wireless device; generating an almanac of base stations based at least in part on proximity of locations of the base stations to the approximate location of the mobile wireless device, the almanac of base stations comprising at least one cooperative terrestrial base station that can communicate with the mobile wireless device in at least one mode and at least one uncooperative terrestrial base station capable of bi-directional communications and configured to prevent data and voice communications with the mobile wireless device, the at least one uncooperative terrestrial base station being configured to acknowledge a message received from the mobile wireless device; and providing the almanac of base stations to the mobile wireless device.
Passive asset tracking with existing infrastructure
A method of passive asset tracking includes associating unique identifying information of a Wi-Fi access point with a moveable asset, receiving unique identifying information and information relating to a location of the Wi-Fi access point encountered by one or more wireless devices and storing at least some of the information received, and tracking a location of the associated asset by the location of the Wi-Fi access point.
Mobile communication device self-locating framework
A mobile communication device. The device comprises a cellular radio transceiver, a GPS receiver, a processor, a memory, and a self-locating application stored in the memory. When executed by the processor the application monitors a received signal strength of the radio transceiver, in response to detecting a rate of cellular radio signal strength increase above a first threshold, obtains GPS coordinates of the device from the GPS receiver and an identity of a serving cell site, stores the GPS coordinates with the identity of the serving cell site in the memory, and in response to detecting a rate of cellular radio signal strength decrease below a second predefined threshold and determining that the cellular radio transceiver is served by the serving cell site associated with the GPS coordinates stored in the memory, determines that the device is at the location associated with the GPS coordinates stored in the memory.
