Phase-based passive source location in three-dimensions

Passive location of an emitter is achieved by sensing a signal propagated from the emitter at multiple sensing locations and determining its phase at each sensing location. A three-dimensional region is searched to find an emitter location for which phase estimates of the signal at the emitter location are in good agreement among the sensing locations. An iterative search from a set of starting points in the region may be performed. The region may be subdivided and each region searched in parallel using multiple processors in parallel. Phase at the sensing locations may be determined locally, using synchronized clocks at the sensing locations, or at a common receiver. In the latter case, signal propagation time from the sensing location to the receiver location is taken into account. The emitter may be a wireless endoscopy capsule, for example.

Embodiments are disclosed for localization of vehicles using beacons. In an embodiment, a method comprises: determining, using at least one processor of a vehicle, that the vehicle has lost external signals (or is receiving degraded external signals) that are used for estimating a position of the vehicle; determining, using the at least one processor, a set of mobile beacons that are available to assist in estimating the position of the vehicle; receiving, using a communication device of the vehicle, broadcast signals from the set of mobile beacons, the broadcast signals including localization data for the set of mobile beacons; selecting, using the at least one processor, a subset of localization data from the set of mobile beacons for assisting in the position estimation of the vehicle; and estimating, using the at least one processor, the position of the vehicle using the subset of localization data.

A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided to estimate the reference position associated with fingerprint data by selectively utilizing an online positioning system. In the context of a method and in an instance in which a global navigation satellite system is available for location determination, the method determines the location of a data collection device in conjunction with the collection of fingerprint data. In this instance, the location is determined based upon information provided by the global navigation satellite system. However, in an instance in which the global navigation satellite system is unavailable for location determination, the method provides, via a computer network, an online positioning system with at least some fingerprint data collected by the data collection device. In this instance, the method also determines the location of the data collection device in conjunction with the fingerprint data based upon information provided by the online positioning system.

The device determines a base measured barometric pressure, and an initial floor that the device is located on in a structure that includes the first geographic location. The device determines an adjusted measured barometric pressure for a second geographic location based on a second measured barometric pressure for the second geographic location and one or more reference barometric pressures that are associated with a reference location. The device determines an altitude for the second geographic location based on the base measured barometric pressure and the adjusted measured barometric pressures. The device causes a server to predict a floor that the device is located on at the second geographic location and to provide floor data that identifies the floor to an interface that is accessible to the device.

For example, the UE 115 may determine whether communications are received from the base station or the relay node based on positioning assistance data that contains positioning-related information about different base stations and relay nodes in the system. The UE may then transmit a position metric based on this determination, where a location server uses this position metric for determining the location of the UE. Additionally or alternatively, the location server or base station may use the positioning assistance data to determine whether an uplink transmission is received directly from the UE or via the relay node and may generate a position metric that the location server uses for determining the location of the UE.
