The image display apparatus generates a driving control signal for generating image light on the basis of an image signal, and allows an image projector to generate the image light to form a pixel on a screen in accordance with a modulation timing by performing modulation driving for a light source, and to generate the image light so as to scan the screen while a light emission direction of the image light changes by performing scan driving, allows a gaze-direction detector to detect a gaze direction of a user, and allows a projection-direction driver to change a projection direction of the image light in accordance with the gaze direction. In the first mode, the image display apparatus controls modulation driving and scan driving so that a configuration of a pixel region on the screen changes from a relatively high pixel density region to a relatively low pixel density region.

A multiple degree of freedom hinge system is provided, which is particularly well adapted for eyewear, such as spatial computing headsets. In the context of such spatial computing headsets having an optics assembly supported by opposing temple arms, the hinge system provides protection against over-extension of the temple arms or extreme deflections that may otherwise arise from undesirable torsional loading of the temple arms. The hinge systems also allow the temple arms to splay outwardly to enable proper fit and enhanced user comfort.

THIN WAVEGUIDE IMAGER

A device for providing a 1D line of an image is disclosed. The device is based on a thin slab waveguide coupled to a beam redirecting device such as a tiltable mirror MEMS scanner, a waveguide-based phased array, or a waveguide-based optical switch switching image light between waveguides of a waveguide array coupled to a collimating element formed in the low-mode slab waveguide. The image may be formed by scanning a collimated beam propagating in the slab waveguide, or by forming the 1D singular distribution of brightness at a same time. The device may be used in a near-eye display for forming a 2D image in angular domain.

A device for providing a 1D line of an image is disclosed. The device includes a wavelength-tunable light source for providing image light having the angular distribution encoded in optical spectrum. The device further includes a thin slab waveguide having an out-coupler in form of a diffraction grating for out-coupling the image light at an angle dependent on wavelength. The image may be formed by scanning a collimated beam propagating in the slab waveguide when using tunable monochromatic light sources, or by forming the 1D singular distribution of brightness at a same time when using a tunable-spectrum light sources. The device may be used in a near-eye display for forming a 2D image in angular domain.

A device for redirecting light in two dimensions (2D) includes a wavelength-tunable light source for providing light having a spectral component at a first wavelength. A 1D redirector redirects the light in a first plane. A thin waveguide is disposed in the first plane. The thin waveguide includes a slab waveguide portion coupled to the 1D redirector for propagating light redirected by the 1D redirector. The slab waveguide portion includes a wavelength-sensitive out-coupler out-coupling the light in a second plane at an angle dependent on the first wavelength. Thus, the light is redirected in two dimensions. A display device providing image in angular domain may be based on the device for redirecting light in two dimensions.

DISPLAY SYSTEM WITH OPTICAL ELEMENTS FOR IN-COUPLING MULTIPLEXED LIGHT STREAMS

Architectures are provided for selectively incoupling one or more streams of light from a multiplexed light stream into a waveguide. The multiplexed light stream can have light with different characteristics (e.g., different wavelengths and/or different polarizations). The waveguide can comprise in-coupling elements that can selectively couple one or more streams of light from the multiplexed light stream into the waveguide while transmitting one or more other streams of light from the multiplexed light stream.

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR FIBER SCANNING PROJECTOR WITH ANGLED EYEPIECE

A method of displaying an image to a viewer includes operating a fiber scanning projector to produce a scanned light beam incident on an incoupling diffractive optical element (DOE) coupled to a waveguide. A portion of the light beam is reflected via a reflective back surface of the incoupling DOE. The reflected portion of the scanned light beam is incident on a reflective optical element, which reflects the light beam back to the incoupling DOE. The returning light beam is then diffracted by the incoupling DOE to produce a second pass first diffracted light beam. The second pass first diffracted light beam is propagated within the planar waveguide via total internal reflection (TIR) to an outcoupling DOE, which directs a portion of the second pass first diffracted light beam toward an eye of a viewer to display the image to the user.
