A method and an apparatus for digitally and automatically controlling a bias voltage of an electro-optic optical modulator are disclosed. The method includes: outputting a scanning bias voltage; acquiring a first optical signal; converting the first optical signal into a first electrical signal; outputting a first direct current signal; calculating an operating bias voltage at each operating point and a half-wave voltage; calculating an error feedback coefficient and a dither amplitude; outputting an operating bias voltage and a dither signal with the dither amplitude; acquiring a second optical signal; converting the second optical signal into a second electrical signal; outputting a harmonic component; calculating a harmonic amplitude and a shift phase; calculating a new bias voltage; and using the new bias voltage as the operating bias voltage.
FIBER-COUPLED LASER WITH TIME VARYING BEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Methods, apparatus, and systems comprising a fiber-coupled laser and time-varying beam characteristics. A laser may generate an optical beam that is launched into one or more lengths of fiber, at least one of which comprises a confinement region that is optically coupled to an output. A perturbation device may modulate, through action upon the one or more lengths of fiber, a beam characteristic over a time period during which the laser is energized. A controller may cause the perturbation device to act upon the one or more lengths of fiber to impart a time-averaged beam characteristic and/or to induce a continuous variation in one or more beam characteristics during system use. A process monitor may sense a metric external to the optical system, and a feedback signal from the process monitor may be coupled into the controller. Dynamic beam characteristics may be modulated based on the feedback signal.

A method of tailoring beam characteristics of a laser beam during fabrication of an electronic device. The method includes: providing a substrate comprising one or more layers; adjusting one or more characteristics of a laser beam; and impinging the laser beam having the adjusted beam characteristics on the substrate to carry out at least one process step for fabricating the electronic device. The adjusting of the laser beam comprises: perturbing the laser beam propagating within a first length of fiber to adjust the one or more beam characteristics of the laser beam in the first length of fiber or a second length of fiber or a combination thereof, the second length of fiber having two or more confinement regions; coupling the perturbed laser beam into the second length of fiber; and emitting the laser beam having the adjusted beam characteristics from the second length of fiber.
SPOT SIZE CONVERTER
A spot size converter includes: a first core layer extending in a first direction and stacked on a cladding layer in a second direction; and a second core layer spaced apart from the first core layer in a third direction. The first core layer has a flat shape in which a size in the second direction is smaller than a size in the third direction, and includes a first tapered portion in which a size thereof in the third direction decreases along an emission direction. A size of the second core layer in the second direction is larger than that of the first core layer in the second direction, and includes a second tapered portion in which a size thereof in the third direction increases along the emission direction. The second tapered portion is disposed to overlap the first tapered portion in the third direction.

FIBER OPTICAL BEAM DELIVERY DEVICE PRODUCING SELECTABLE INTENSITY PROFILES
An optical beam delivery device is configured to generate, from an optical beam, selectable intensity profiles. The device has a first length of fiber having a first refractive index profile (RIP), and a second length of fiber having second RIP that is different from the first RIP. The second length of fiber includes coaxial confinement regions arranged to confine at least a portion of an adjusted optical beam. The confined portion corresponds to an intensity distribution of different intensity distributions. The intensity distribution is established by a corresponding state of different states of perturbation that is applied to the device such that the confined portion is configured to provide, at an output of the second length of fiber, a selected intensity profile of the selectable intensity profiles.
METHODS OF AND SYSTEMS FOR MATERIALS PROCESSING USING OPTICAL BEAMS
A method of materials processing using an optical beam includes: launching the optical beam into a first length of fiber having a first refractive-index profile (RIP); coupling the optical beam from the first length of fiber into a second length of fiber having a second RIP; modifying one or more beam characteristics of the optical beam in the first length of fiber, in the second length of fiber, or in the first and second lengths of fiber; and/or generating an output beam, having the modified one or more beam characteristics of the optical beam, from the second length of fiber. The first RIP can be the same as or differ from the second RIP. The modifying of the one or more beam characteristics can include changing the one or more beam characteristics from a first state to a second state. The first state can differ from the second state.
FIBER OPTICAL BEAM DELIVERY DEVICE PRODUCING OUTPUT EXHIBITING INTENSITY DISTRIBUTION PROFILE HAVING NON-ZERO ELLIPTICITY
An optical beam delivery device formed of optical fibers that are configured to produce an output exhibiting an intensity distribution profile having non-zero ellipticity includes a first length of fiber through which an incident optical beam having beam characteristics propagates and which has a first refractive index profile (RIP). The first RIP enables, in response to an applied perturbation, modification of the beam characteristics of the optical beam to form an adjusted beam having modified beam characteristics relative to the beam characteristics of the optical beam. A second length of fiber is coupled to the first length of fiber and formed with a set of one or more confinement regions that define a second RIP and confine at least a portion of the adjusted beam to generate, at an output of the second length of fiber, an intensity distribution profile having non-zero ellipticity.
FIBER-COUPLED DEVICE FOR VARYING BEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Disclosed herein are methods, apparatus, and systems for providing an optical beam delivery system, comprising an optical fiber including a first length of fiber comprising a first RIP formed to enable, at least in part, modification of one or more beam characteristics of an optical beam by a perturbation assembly arranged to modify the one or more beam characteristics, the perturbation assembly coupled to the first length of fiber or integral with the first length of fiber, or a combination thereof and a second length of fiber coupled to the first length of fiber and having a second RIP formed to preserve at least a portion of the one or more beam characteristics of the optical beam modified by the perturbation assembly within one or more first confinement regions. The optical beam delivery system may include an optical system coupled to the second length of fiber including one or more free-space optics configured to receive and transmit an optical beam comprising the modified one or more beam characteristics.
