During image density adjustment, the controller forms a predetermined patch toner image on the photoreceptor, irradiates the patch toner image with light, and control the image density adjuster to adjust image density based on reflected light from the patch toner image. During image forming, the controller causes the reflective optical sensor to emit light on timing that a predetermined leading edge area of the recording area passes, and decides based on reflected light therefrom whether a width in the main scanning direction of a recording medium is longer than a predetermined reference length.

An image forming apparatus includes a fixing device having a heater, a first temperature detection unit, a pair of second temperature detection units, a pair of first sheet-width detection units, a pair of second sheet-width detection units, and a control unit. The heater includes a first heat generating element, a second heat generating element having a length smaller than a length of the first heat generating element in a longitudinal direction, and a third heat generating element having a length smaller than the length of the second heat generating element in the longitudinal direction. The control unit controls a temperature of the heater based on a detection result of the pair of first sheet-width detection units, a detection result of the pair of second sheet-width detection units, and a detection result of the pair of second temperature detection units.

An image forming apparatus includes a conveyor, an actuator, an image forming unit, a detection unit, and a controller. The conveyor transports a sheet having a length measured in a transport direction. The actuator drives the conveyor. The image forming unit forms an image on the sheet. The detection unit includes a first sheet detection sensor that outputs a detection signal indicating whether the sheet transported by the conveyor passes through a first predetermined detection position. The controller controls the actuator based on the length of the sheet in response to an indication that the detection unit is not operating normally.

An image forming apparatus includes a fixing device having a heater that includes a first heating element, a second heating element having a length smaller than the first heating element length, and a third heating element having a length smaller than the second heating element length. The image forming apparatus further includes a first temperature detection unit, a control unit, second temperature detection units, first and second sheet-width detection units, and a determination unit. The control unit controls a heater temperature based on the first temperature detection unit detection result. The determination unit determines a width of the recording material based on a detection result of the first sheet-width detection units, a detection result of the second sheet-width detection units, and a detection result of the second temperature detection units.

The controller is configured to receive image data corresponding to a target image to be formed on a sheet, convert the received image data to modified image data corresponding to a modified image that includes the target image and an added margin on at least one side of the target image in a sheet width direction side, control the image forming unit to form the modified image based on the modified image data, and cause the sheet to be conveyed to the image forming unit such that a positioning of the sheet in the sheet width direction overlaps with the target so that a fixing portion of the fixing unit overlaps with the target image in the modified image formed on the sheet.

The residual quantity detecting part detects a residual quantity of the mediums stored in the medium storing part as a relative residual quantity with regard to a maximum storing quantity of the mediums in the medium storing part. The storage part stores maximum storing number of the mediums corresponding to the maximum storing quantity of the medium storing part. The residual medium estimating part calculates number of estimated residuals of the mediums stored in the medium storing part on the basis of the relative residual quantity detected by the residual quantity detecting part and the maximum storing number stored in the storage part.

The apparatus sets first sheet information selected by a user in association with the sheet holding unit from a plurality of items of sheet information stored in the storage unit and notifies the user of a mismatch in a case where a size of a sheet that the first sheet information set in the setting indicates, and a size of a sheet detected by the detection unit are mismatched.
