The device time-stamps the cached data, and, in some cases, all data that is generated or created by or received at the device may be cached and/or streamed. The device may be a field device, a controller, an input/output device, a network management device, a user interface device, or a historian device, and the device may be a node of a network supporting big data in the process plant. Multiple devices in the network may support layered or leveled caching of data.

A system for remotely measuring the characteristics of water passing through a plumbing control device (PCD) includes a sensor configured to measure characteristics of the water to obtain measured data. The sensor is also linked to a microcontroller of the PCD. An antenna board is linked, and configured to transmit power, to both the microcontroller and the sensor. The antenna board is configured to receive power transmitted from a mobile device and, in turn, transmit power to the microcontroller and the sensor. When power is not being transmitted from the antenna board, the microcontroller and the sensor may be powered off.

A system includes an encoder to monitor a machine and generate an encoder output signal indicative of at least one of the motion or position of the machine. A combiner can be configured to receive the encoder output signal from the encoder and to receive machine diagnostic data from at least one other sensor. The combiner can combine the machine diagnostic data with the encoder output signal to provide a combined signal that includes the machine diagnostic data synchronized with the at least one of the motion or position of the machine.
