Method and Apparatus for Joint Reconstruction
Apparatus and methods for replacing a knee joint with an implant prosthesis are described. The method includes distracting the knee, locating the pre-diseased joint line of the knee and referencing cuts to the femur and tibia in the coronal plane relative to the joint line. The method further comprises determining the posterior slope of a cut to the tibia in the sagittal plane such that the gaps between the tibia and femur in extension and flexion are substantially equal. Apparatus for use in the method is described, including a distractor for distracting the joint, a joint level finder for finding the pre-diseased joint line and a flexion gap optimisation device.
Surgical device
A surgical device is presented that combines multiple components and functions, such as, joint distraction, soft tissue distraction, a separation force that exerts a uniform tension on the knee ligaments, pre-aligned cut guides, and posterior cut guards that protect the posterior knee joint from unintentional damage by the surgical saw. A method of performing a partial knee replacement is also presented.
METHODS AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR BALANCING OF LIGAMENTS IN FLEXION
An exemplary method, and corresponding instrumentation, of balancing the ligaments of a knee during flexion is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes forming initial resection cuts in a patient' femur and tibia, and subsequently placing the knee in flexion to form a flexion space between the posterior femoral condyles and the resected tibial surface. The method may further include sequentially inserting one or more flexion spacers into the flexion space, and selecting the flexion spacer that provides the ligaments with equal tension. The flexion spacers may include a medial platform and a lateral platform wherein, for at least one of the flexion spacers, the lateral platform has a greater thickness than the medial platform. The method may further include engaging an alignment sizing tool with the selected flexion spacer, forming a pair of pin holes in the femur, and mounting a cutting block to the femur using the pin holes.
Probe unit, treatment instrument, and treatment system
A probe unit includes, a probe configured to treat a bone by ultrasonic vibration, a hollow sheath which surrounds the probe and which has a first portion at a small distance from a central axis, and a second portion at a greater distance from the central axis than the first portion, and a knob configured to rotate the sheath relative to the probe between a first position for insertion between the bone and a living tissue facing the bone so that the first portion is located between the bone and the living tissue and a second position for insertion between the bone and the living tissue so that the second portion is located between the bone and the living tissue.
System and method for load balancing in knee replacement procedures
The present disclosure relates to a system and method of knee ligament balancing for knee replacement procedures. The disclosure provides a system of components to implant to achieve ligament balancing. In addition, instruments and methods are provided to achieve the desired balance of the ligaments before final fixation.
Orthopaedic system and method for assembling prosthetic components
An orthopaedic system and method to assemble an orthopaedic prosthesis is disclosed. The system may also include prosthetic trial components, which may be used to size and select the components of the orthopaedic prosthesis. The system may include components of the orthopaedic prosthesis such as, for example, a prosthetic femoral component, a prosthetic tibial component, a prosthetic stem component, and a prosthetic sleeve component.
Surgical aid for joints
A surgical aid for joints which allows the positioning of mono-compartment or three-compartment prosthetic components so that the isometry of the capsular-ligament tissues of the knee is maintained during the entire range of motion. Such surgical aid comprises: a first element (10) intended to be positioned in contact with a first bone of a joint; a second element (20), intended to be positioned in contact with a second bone of the joint; the first and second element (10,20) being movable relatively to one another along at least a first direction (X); a displacement sensor (30) predisposed for measuring a relative displacement between the first and second element (10,20); an actuator/motor (50) predisposed for exerting a force that tends to move the first element (10) and second element (20) away from one another; a pressure sensor (40) which measures the force that is exerted between the first and second bone; a processing module (60) arranged to control the actuator/motor (50) so as to calculate the variation of the slope arising from the relationship between distance and force; the processing module (60) receives in input the signal emitted by the displacement sensor (30), the force sensor (10) and the pressure sensor (40).
Soft Tissue Tension and Bone Resection Instruments and methods
A device for preparing a femur of a patient for receipt of a knee implant in both extension and flexion relative to a resected tibia plateau based on applying tension to medial and lateral collateral ligaments of said patient, comprising a tibial baseplate, a tensioner, the tensioner comprising a tensioner body having a tensioner portion, the tensioner portion affixed to the tibial baseplate, and an expander arm comprising an elongated body portion, a superior side of the elongated body portion having a spiked tip adjacent a posterior end thereof. The spiked tip interacts with an intracondylar notch under tension. The expander arm is operatively connected to the tensioner body via the tensioner portion, the tensioner portion configured for use in selectively raising and lowering the expander arm relative to the tibial baseplate to apply tension to the medial and lateral collateral ligaments in extension or flexion.
Device and method for installing femoral prosthetic knee joint
Devices and method for performing replacement prosthetic knee surgery are disclosed in which a spacing means is introduced between the femur (1) and tibia (2) while the patella (9) is in place. The spacing means separates the femur (1) from the tibia (2) by an amount essentially equal to or greater than the required flexion gap (4). An alignment device (26) is used for performing femoral bone cuts, which device attaches temporarily to a fitted tibial plate.
Arthoplasty systems and methods for optimally aligning and tensioning a knee prosthesis
A combination of a first assembly for guiding resection of a femur and tibia of a knee joint and a second assembly including femoral and tibial knee components. The combination of the first assembly and the second assembly provides optimal placement and positioning of the femoral and tibial knee components to achieve near-normal knee kinematics and tension. The preparation for and placement of the prosthetic knee components provides medial-pivoting kinematics mimicking that of the natural knee thereby promoting improved outcome for the patient.
