Surgical suturing instrument comprising a non-circular needle
A surgical suturing system is disclosed. The surgical suturing system comprises a shaft comprising a shaft diameter, a firing drive, and an end effector extending distally from the shaft. The end effector comprises a needle track and a needle comprising suturing material attached thereto, wherein the needle is configured to be guided by the needle track and actuated by the firing drive through a firing stroke, and wherein the needle is movable along a needle path comprising a maximum capture width which is greater than the shaft diameter.
SUTURE PACKAGING
A suture package for retaining a barbed suture is provided. The suture package includes a suture retaining member including an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall is radially spaced from the outer wall and defines a suture retaining area therebetween. The inner wall defines a needle retaining area and includes at least one opening therein to permit reception of at least one suture therethrough. The outer wall includes a plurality of inwardly extending tabs configured to engage a cover. The suture package further includes a cover configured to be received within the outer wall of the suture retaining member and to selectively engage the inwardly extending tabs formed thereon.
SURGICAL DISSECTORS CONFIGURED TO APPLY MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENERGY
A surgical instrument comprising an end effector is disclosed. The end effector comprises a surgical dissector. The surgical dissector can apply mechanical and/or electrosurgical energy to treated tissue.
APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR APPROXIMATING AND SECURING TISSUE
Disclosed is a device that uses suture to close various layers of tissue quickly and precisely. The device and methods enhance the efficiency, consistency and cost-effectiveness of traditional hand-suturing without compromising cosmetic or wound healing outcomes. Adjustable instruments on either side of the device are applied to opposing sides of the desired layer of tissue to approximate the edges of the tissue to be closed. The user may control the delivery of a single stitch or a series of stitches at an adjustable interval to the desired layer of tissue. An instrument may perform the stitch or series of stitches as the operator guides the device along the tissue opening. Once the device has delivered the appropriate stitch(es), the user may remove excess suture material and release the tissue from the instruments on either side of the incision and the process may be repeated as necessary to close a wound.
Apparatus for subcuticular suturing and corresponding method of use thereof
An apparatus capable of and a corresponding method for subcuticular suturing of an incision in a single pass is provided. The apparatus includes a straight needle, a suture thread extending from a free end of the needle, and a grip couplable to or pre-attached to the needle. The grip is used for controlling, manipulating, and advancing the needle and its sharp end through the incision. The needle is generally long enough to pierce and bind both sides of the incision together without having to pull the entire needle and any slack in the suture thread through each piercing prior to proceeding to the next piercing. The needle holds the entire incision closed presets the entire path for the suture thread prior to pulling the suture thread through the incision to hold the incision closed.
Tray system for transfer, counting, storage and disposal of surgical instruments
The present Invention provides a transfer tray for transferring one or more surgical Instruments securely. The present invention further provides a counting tray for the collection and securing of used surgical instruments. Additionally, the present invention provides a surgical instrument disposal container comprising a transfer tray coupled to a counting tray such that used surgical instruments are enclosed within the counting tray by the transfer tray.
Systems and methods for increased operating room efficiency
Systems, devices and methods to improve safety and efficiency in an operating room comprise providing a suture package that holds new suture needles and needle receptacles for storing used needles. The devices can be safely worn for the surgeon to self-dispense new suture needles in the near surgical field and to secure the used needles into a needle trap or a needle retainer located on his extremity, on his operative instruments or on the surgical drapes. The device may provide automated and/or simplified needle counting both during use and after removal from the surgical field. The device may be configured for ergonomic and efficient use so as to minimize the actions and motions of the surgeon to dispense and secure the needle.
ARTICULATION CONTROL FEATURES FOR SUTURING INSTRUMENT
A surgical instrument for treating a patient includes a shaft assembly and a body assembly. The shaft assembly includes a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and an articulation joint operable to selectively articulate the distal end portion relative to the proximal end portion. The body assembly includes a joint drive assembly, an actuator, and a joint stabilizer. The joint drive assembly is operatively connected to the articulation joint and configured to actuate the articulation to thereby articulate the distal end portion relative to the proximal end portion. The actuator is configured to actuate the joint drive assembly for articulating the articulation joint. The joint stabilizer includes a detent abutment and a detent notch configured to releasably capture the joint drive assembly and thereby inhibit articulation of the distal end portion of the shaft assembly relative to the proximal end portion of the shaft assembly.
