Devices and methods for suture placement
A suturing device includes an elongate body, an actuator, and a curved needle holder. The elongate body includes a distal end portion extending along a longitudinal axis. The actuator is operable between a first operating position and a second operating position. The curved needle holder extends away from the distal end portion or is provided as part of the distal end portion of the elongate body. The curved needle holder includes a distal end section having a distal-most tip, and defines a curved needle passage and a distal opening adjacent the distal-most tip. A distance measured parallel with the longitudinal axis between where the curved needle holder begins to curve away from the longitudinal axis to either where the elongate body begins to curve away from the longitudinal axis or where the elongate body connects with a handle can be between about 10 cm to about 20 cm. Also, the distal-most tip can be offset from the longitudinal axis in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis an offset distance less than about 7 mm.
SURGICAL NEEDLE SAFETY SHIELD AND CONTAINER FOR HOLDING THE SAME
Disclosed is a surgical needle safety shield for retaining surgical needles. The safety shield having a housing that can be split to allow for user-initiated placement and removal of the surgical needle therefrom. The safety shield also having a needle access port within the housing to allow for a portion of the surgical needle to be grasped to facilitate removal and insertion of the surgical needle in the housing. Also disclosed is a container for storing one or more surgical needle safety shields and a kit made up of such a container and one or more surgical needle safety shields.
Laparoscopic suturing devices, needles, sutures, and drive systems
Devices are provided for a suturing device used during laparoscopic surgical procedures. A suturing needle includes a shaft forming a rod axis; a curved body having a piercing tip at a first end and a base at a second end; and an arm extending radially from the shaft to the base of the curved body such that the curved body is positioned in a plane orthogonal to the rod axis of the shaft and rotatable about the shaft in the plane orthogonal to the rod axis. The suturing device includes a housing, a suturing needle, one or more sutures, a suture magazine configured to hold the one or more sutures, and a drive system, whereby the drive system may actuate the suturing needle to rotate in the plane orthogonal to the drive system, allowing the suturing needle to drive in to and out of tissue to apply a suture.
Surgical clip applier comprising adaptive control in response to a strain gauge circuit
A surgical clip applier comprising an electric motor system is disclosed. The electric motor system is configured to drive a clip firing system of the surgical clip applier. The surgical clip applier further comprises a control system configured to control the electric motor system. The control system is configured to monitor a strain gauge circuit to assess the crimping force experienced by the clip firing system. In at least one instance, one or more strain gauges are mounted to a drive shaft and/or jaw of the clip firing system. The control system modifies the operation of the surgical clip applier when the voltage of the strain gauge circuit exceeds and/or falls below a threshold. In at least one instance, the control system modulates the width, or duration, of voltage pulses applied to the electric motor system to control the speed of the electric motor system.
SUTURE INVENTORY MANAGEMENT CART
The present disclosure relates to a suture inventory management device that stores and dispenses individual units of sutures from a first compartment and stores boxes of units of sutures of the same type of sutures in a second compartment. In some embodiments, the suture inventory management device is a suture storage cart comprising suture storage systems. The suture storage systems including at least one pair of suture storage compartments, the pair of suture storage compartments comprising a bulk suture storage compartment and a suture unit storage compartment. Units of sutures are stored in the suture unit storage compartment and boxes of the same type of sutures are stored in the corresponding bulk suture storage compartments. The interior of the suture unit storage compartment has a hinged top lid transparent door that opens by sliding vertically and the bulk suture storage compartments are enclosed by transparent doors.
Apparatus and method for tissue closure
A tissue closure device includes a pusher assembly having a drive arm extending from a drive shaft and a needle driver at a distal end of the drive arm, wherein the needle driver is capable of releasably engaging and rotating a suturing needle having a pointed end and a blunt end about a rotational axis and a cartridge having a protective housing and the suturing needle, the cartridge extending from a distal end of a cartridge holder assembly and releasably attached to the cartridge holder assembly. A pointed end of the suturing needle may be positioned within the protective housing before and after a complete rotation of the suturing needle about the rotational axis. A removable electronic module may be provided controlled by an actuator that mechanically engages the drive shaft to rotate the drive shaft and the needle driver, thereby rotating the suturing needle about the rotational axis.
Surgical clip applier comprising an automatic clip feeding system
A surgical clip applier is disclosed which is configured to automatically feed a clip from a clip cartridge once the surgical clip applier is positioned in the patient.
Systems, devices and methods for storing suture needles and using robotics for delivering selected suture needles through trocars
A suture needle container includes a receptacle having a proximal end with an opening and a closed distal end. A hollow mandrel is disposed inside the receptacle. The mandrel projects from the closed distal end toward the opening at the proximal end of the receptacle. The mandrel includes a tubular wall having a proximal end aligned with the proximal end of the receptacle and a distal end connected with the closed distal end of the receptacle. An elongated slot is formed in the tubular wall. A suture needle is disposed within the elongated slot. A suture is secured to the proximal end of the suture needle and wrapped around the hollow mandrel. A cover closes the opening at the proximal end of the receptacle for sealing the suture needle and the suture inside the receptacle for maintaining a sterile environment inside the receptacle.
Surgical clip applier comprising adaptive firing control
A surgical clip applier comprising an electric motor system is disclosed. The electric motor system is configured to drive one or more drive systems of the surgical clip applier. The surgical clip applier comprises a control system configured to control the electric motor system. The control system is configured to monitor a parameter of the electric motor system to assess the operation of the one or more drive systems. In at least one instance, the control system monitors the electric current drawn by an electric motor and adapts the operation of the electric motor based on the electric current being drawn by the motor. The control system slows the electric motor down when the electric current drawn by the electric motor exceeds a threshold.
