METHOD FOR CREATING A FLEXIBLE STAPLE LINE
A method for creating a flexible fastener line is disclosed. The fastener line comprises fasteners oriented in directions which are transverse or oblique to a tissue incision created by a cutting member. The fasteners can translate and/or rotate within the tissue when the tissue is stretched thereby creating flexibility within the tissue.
Staple cartridges with cam surfaces configured to engage primary and secondary portions of a lockout of a surgical stapling device
A surgical stapling assembly that includes a surgical stapling device that has a lockout that is movable between a locked position and an unlocked position. The assembly further includes a staple cartridge with a first cam surface configured to cammingly engage a primary portion of the lockout to move the lockout laterally from the locked position and a second cam surface configured cammingly engage a secondary portion of the lockout to further move the lockout laterally into the locked position when the cartridge is operably seated in the device.
CUTTING MEMBER FOR A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
A surgical instrument includes an anvil assembly, a cartridge assembly, and a knife assembly having first and second blades, a curved blade or a circular blade, any of which may be serrated or uniform.
Skin stapler with components optimized for construction with plant based materials
A surgical stapler includes a handle assembly 80 made of paper pulp products or other eco-friendly material. The handle assembly and components of the staple mechanism housing are designed to accommodate the decreased material strength of the handle assembly. Handle retainer ears 110 are attached to the staple mechanism housing and prevent flexing of the lever grip. The retainer ears in combination with a raised circular boss 16 of the handle assembly facilities the use of lower strength materials, such as paper pulp products. An efficient staple housing mechanism includes a new return spring 120, a visual guide rod or alignment indicator 150 and a flattened stapler guide 130. An improved lever grip includes concentrically trimmed arc in the lever grip sidewalls 117. An improved lever grip includes an extended arched rear section 113 to comport with a new positive mating area 115 of the handle.
Suturing instrument with multi-mode cartridges
A surgical kit includes an instrument and two or more cartridges. The instrument includes a body, a shaft assembly, and a cartridge receiving assembly. The cartridge receiving assembly has a movable output feature, which is configured to move in response to activation of the actuation input feature. The cartridges may include a first suturing cartridge and a second suturing cartridge, with first and second suture needles, respectively. The second suture needle may extend along an arc that has a larger radius of curvature than an arc associated with the first suture needle. The cartridges may also include a drive assembly that is operable to drive the needle along an orbital path in response to movement of the actuation input feature. The cartridges may also include features that are operable to apply clips or staples. The cartridges may also include features that are operable to grasp or cut.
Biometallic Alloy Surgical Staples and Methods
A surgical staple is provided. The surgical staple includes a crown having a center portion and a foldable portion, and a pair of legs extending orthogonally from the crown and configured to puncture tissue. The crown and the pair of legs are fabricated from a biodegradable metal such that biodegradation causes the center portion to separate from the foldable portion and the pair of legs, and the foldable portion and the pair of legs are absorbable within the tissue.
Surgical fastener applying apparatus
A surgical fastener applying apparatus includes an anvil half-section and a cartridge-receiving half-section including an elongated channel member having a pair of opposed openings defined through sidewalls thereof. A disposable assembly including a single use loading unit and a single use firing unit is configured to be releasably supported within the cartridge-receiving half-section. The disposable assembly includes a stationary housing for supporting the firing unit which includes a distal extension for supporting the single use loading unit. The stationary housing includes a pair of flared tabs configured to be releasably received within the openings of the cartridge-receiving half-section to releasably engage the disposable assembly within the cartridge-receiving half-section.
STAPLE CARTRIDGE COMPRISING A TISSUE THICKNESS COMPENSATOR
A staple cartridge is disclosed. The staple cartridge can comprise a cartridge body comprising a deck and a bottom surface opposite the deck. The staple cartridge can comprise a plurality of staple cavities, wherein each staple cavity extends into the cartridge body from the deck to the bottom surface. Additionally, a plurality of wells can be defined into the staple cartridge from the deck to a lowermost surface of the well. A plurality of staples can be removably positioned in the staple cavities. The staple cartridge can comprise a tissue thickness compensator releasably secured to the cartridge body, wherein the tissue thickness compensator comprises a compensator body and a plurality of extensions extending from the compensator body into the wells, wherein at least one extension is compressed within one of the wells. Each well can surround at least one staple cavity and/or can extend between at least two staple cavities.
Surgical stapling buttresses and adjunct materials
A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge. In various forms, the buttress material comprises a buttress body that is sized to be operably received on a deck of the surgical staple cartridge. The buttress body includes at least four edges and a central portion. At least two of the edges have a plurality of edge notches formed therein. The central portion may include a plurality of cutout openings therein.
REINFORCED BRIDGE SUPERELASTIC BONE COMPRESSION STAPLE AND INSERTER SYSTEM
The invention is a staple comprising a bridge member having a top surface and an opposing bottom surface defining a thickness between and two lateral edges defining a width therebetween and either the thickness or the width includes a center flared area, such as a “diamond-like” shape meaning that it has a v-shape on opposing lateral edges flanked by opposing fillets to form an inserter mount area and the staple has a pair of legs spaced apart along the axis and each joined at a rounded flared shoulder to the bridge member. In a four-legged version the bridge has a waist.
